How some of the person from our state wanted to create and controversy over a historical move from the state government under the leadership of honourable chief minister of Assam, Sri Himanta Biswa Sarma
When
Recently, our govt dedicated the newly constructed flyover connecting Cycle Factory and Lal Ganesh in Guwahati to the people. The flyover has been named after Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, and some sections have opposed or expressed dissatisfaction over it. It has been argued that Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had no connection with Assam, which is not true.
After independence, for political interests, we were deliberately kept away from many historical facts. Therefore, I would like to share some information on this matter. Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee had opposed the Muslim League’s attempt to separate Assam from India through the grouping system and make it a part of East Pakistan. At a time when great Assamese leaders like Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi and Jananeta Bhimbor Deori were opposing grouping, Dr. Mukherjee also supported Assam remaining a part of India for the protection of Assam’s culture and India’s unity. At a time when strategies were being made to hand Assam over to East Pakistan, he was among the handful of leaders who stood in support of Assam and the Assamese people.
Not only that, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s contribution behind Assamese becoming a medium of education in Assam is also remarkable. According to records, in 1934, the same year Dr. Mukherjee took charge as the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, renowned Assamese educationist Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barua secured first class first position in Pali at the postgraduate level from Calcutta University. In 1937, Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barua joined the university as a part-time lecturer in Pali, and in 1938, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mukherjee appointed him as a professor of Modern Language (ML). As Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, from 1938 onwards, Dr. Mukherjee permitted the use of regional languages as the medium of instruction at the matriculation level and supported Assamese-medium education in Assam instead of Bengali.
Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was such a personality whose contributions were not limited to just one state. We all know that from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Gujarat to Assam, he worked towards uniting every corner of the country. Therefore, instead of confining him within the boundaries of any one state, we should put an end to the unnecessary controversy started by some sections and pay respect to a great personality of the nation. At the same time, we should move Assam’s journey of development forward with a positive mindset. Just as there is a Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Chair at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, and a road in the national capital Delhi named after Bodofa Upendranath Brahma, similarly, paying tribute in Assam to those who were well-wishers of Assam despite being born in other parts of the country is a logical and justified step.
