The importance of bunds in the conservation of water bodies:

• One of the major reasons for the Chennai floods is the encroachment on the fresh water bodies.

• The importance of the water bodies were taken it for granted due to increasing urbanization and over population.

• To avoid encroachment on the fresh water bodies, bunds are to be strengthened and maintained periodically. Since bunds indicate the boundary and other structural parameters of the water body which helps to avoid encroachment in future

• The below picture depicts the completed bund strengthening efforts of CII – SR Water Alliance in GangaiAmman Kovil Kulam, Injambakkam, Chennai which was supported by Grundfos India

• Plantation of palm seeds and other native tree saplings will further strengthen the bunds.

• Let us understand the importance of bund strengthening and work towards water resilient future.

CII – SR Water Alliance is committed to make Chennai as a water resilient city.
