Kaveri Singh Rana, lovingly known as “The Dogmother,” is an Indian animal welfare activist, rescuer, and the founder of Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust (SMART Sanctuary) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. She left behind a corporate career and chose a life dedicated to animals who had been abandoned, abused, injured, disabled, or simply forgotten.
For Kaveri, animal rescue is not a profession—it is a promise.
Every injured street dog, abandoned puppy, frightened cat, and helpless animal deserves a chance to live with dignity, compassion, and love. Over the years, she has personally worked to rescue, treat, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong care to thousands of animals, including dogs, cats, cows, and other vulnerable animals.
🐾 The Story Behind SMART Sanctuary
In 2017, Kaveri founded the Sophie Memorial Animal Relief Trust (SMART Sanctuary) in loving memory of Sophie, a rescued dog who changed her life forever.
What began as a tribute to one beloved rescue grew into a mission to protect countless others.
SMART Sanctuary became a safe haven for rescued dogs, cats, cows, and other abandoned and injured animals, particularly those who are often overlooked because of severe injuries, disability, old age, blindness, paralysis, or the trauma of abuse.
❤️ Rescuing the Forgotten
Kaveri's work goes far beyond simply rescuing animals from the streets. Many of the animals who reach SMART Sanctuary arrive after suffering unimaginable cruelty—hit by vehicles, abandoned when they become sick or disabled, left injured on roadsides, or forced to survive without food, shelter, or medical care.
Some arrive unable to walk.
Some are blind.
Some have been abused.
And some have simply lost all faith in human beings.
Kaveri believes that every life matters, regardless of whether an animal is young, old, disabled, injured, or considered “unadoptable.”
Through animal rescue, veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, shelter, food, sterilization, vaccination, adoption, and lifelong care, SMART Sanctuary works to give these forgotten animals something they may never have experienced before—a safe place to call home.

Known affectionately as The Dogmother, Kaveri has dedicated her life to advocating for India's street animals and creating awareness about responsible animal welfare, rescue, adoption, sterilization, vaccination, and compassionate treatment of stray dogs and cats.
Her journey is a reminder that one person can make a difference when compassion becomes a lifelong commitment.
