When a grocery app beats the government to a disaster site, that's not efficiency. That's an indictment.

Sunday, Satya Niketan: a 5-storey PG collapses. Students trapped under rubble. Panic in a lane meant to hold half the load it does.

The PCR call came in at 1:34 PM.

The first ambulance on scene wasn't the government's. It was Blinkit's — deployed because locals, watching their friends buried in concrete, had nowhere else to call.

Let that sit for a second.

An app built to deliver groceries in 10 minutes outpaced a state machinery built specifically — and funded specifically — to respond to exactly this kind of emergency.

This is not the first time Satya Niketan has collapsed. 2022. Now 2026. Same lane. Same story. A building "renovated" until a load-bearing pillar gave way — while the area sat one PCR call away from disaster the whole time, because everyone already knew these buildings weren't safe.

So don't clap for Blinkit. That's the wrong lesson.

The right question is this: why does a city with an NDRF, a Fire Service, and CAT ambulances on paper still lose the first critical hour to a delivery company? Why does "double-engine" governance mean faster grocery delivery than emergency response?

Five people are dead. Not because disaster response doesn't exist on paper — because congestion, unregulated construction, and institutional apathy made sure it couldn't reach them in time.

Efficient private response isn't a substitute for state accountability. It's proof of exactly where the state failed.

A building fell today in Satya Niketan.

It wasn't just bricks and concrete. It was a PG — packed with students who called it home while chasing a degree from Delhi University's South Campus.

Rescue operations are still underway. What caused the collapse is still being investigated. But early reports are already pointing at basement work and a structure that may not have been built to hold what it was holding.

Here's the part that should unsettle all of us:

This isn't new. This isn't rare. This is Delhi University's South Campus every single day.

Universities don't build enough hostels for the students they admit. So students go looking. They find PGs carved out of ordinary homes — homes never meant to house this many people. Landlords divide, subdivide, and squeeze in more rooms because the demand never stops coming.

Nobody's watching the wiring. Nobody's checking the foundation. Nobody's asking if five floors were ever safe to stack on that plot.

Until one day, it isn't.

Then comes the outrage. The inspections. The promises. "This will never happen again."

And then — silence. Until the next one.

Because a press statement was never going to fix a structural problem. Only structural fixes fix structural problems.

This isn't a construction failure. It's an education system that keeps admitting more students than it's willing to house safely — and lets the market fill the gap however it can.

A student should lie awake worrying about their exam tomorrow.

Not whether the ceiling above them makes it through the night.
