Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) on 5th to 7th September 2025, at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) Darjeeling, was a hugely rewarding experience for all the members of Rotary Himalayas. For the first time we made this program completely sponsored for the participating students form class x to XII, who were from economically weaker section of the society. They were mostly from government funded schools from in and around Darjeeling. Feedback and impact assessment of the 63 participants, 24 girls and 39 boys, tell the story 'Life changing experience', 'Learning and development',' Leadership development', 'Learning about community service' 'Confidence building', ' Communication skills' and many more.
This hugely successful event was possible only with the help of sponsors and the guests like Mr. Praween Prakash, SP, Police, FR. Michael, Principal St. Robert's School; Mr. Pravin Zimba, Educationist and President GDNS, Mrs. Pema Lhamu, Supt. of Customs. Grateful to Col. Rajneesh Joshi Principal, SM Mr. Hainder Singh and the staff of HMI for opening the doors of this world-famous institute for this program. Lastly pat on our backs for taking up this challenge and making it a success.

This Independence Day, let’s give freedom a new meaning. 🇮🇳

Freedom is more than the right to speak, vote, and dream; it’s the opportunity to learn, grow, and lead.

As we celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day, Rotary Himalayas invites you to give that opportunity to a young mind from the hills.

This September, we are hosting Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2025 at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, a 3-day leadership & adventure program for 60 bright students from lesser privileged backgrounds in rural Darjeeling Hills schools.

For many, it will be their first time beyond the classroom:

⚖️ From Courtroom to Classroom — Youth Meet the Justice System

On 10 July 2025, the Rotary Club of Darjeeling Himalayas opened its new Rotary year with a powerful initiative — the Young Citizens Judiciary Visit at the Darjeeling District Court.

Even before her formal installation on 12 July, President 2025–26, Rtn. Ritika Sharma — a practicing advocate and proud member of the Darjeeling Bar Association — chose to begin her term by giving back to the legal fraternity that shaped her journey.

Students from Maharani Girls Higher Secondary School, Darjeeling Hindi Higher Secondary School, and Darjeeling Government Higher Secondary School explored the halls of justice through guided tours and interactive sessions with distinguished members of the Darjeeling Bar Association:

Adv. Taranga Pandit, President of the Bar Association — on the importance of knowing one’s rights and responsibilities.

Adv. Dinesh Chandra Rai, Secretary of the Bar Association — on cyber safety, mobile usage, and responsible internet behaviour.

Adv. Gunjan Sherpa — on the structure and function of the judiciary and career opportunities in law.

Special Public Prosecutor Adv. Riwaz Rai — on POCSO awareness and laws protecting minors.

Adv. Rajashree Dasgupta — on the Juvenile Justice system, child-friendly courts, and mental health for youth in conflict with the law.

Adv. Pranay Rai, Vice President of the Bar Association, Public Prosecutor of the District Court, and former MLA of Darjeeling — on careers in law, public service, and governance, drawing from his own journey to inspire the students.

A big thank you to the Darjeeling Bar Association for their wholehearted collaboration, and to our Youth Service Chair, Rtn. Anirudh Chettri, for flawlessly coordinating this impactful programme.

This is Rotary Himalayas — where youth empowerment meets civic education, and service always begins with community.
