Government of Kerala has taken a revolutionary step by converting Employment Exchanges into Employability Centres.Deviating from the convention of providing opportunities to job-seekers, the employability centres will review the skills and aptitude of applicants and form a database of employable workforce. This talent pool will be left at the disposal of Government and private employers. On regist
ering with the centre, candidates will be called for an aptitude assessment and based on their potential will be referred for the available opportunities or for further skill enhancement sessions. The Labour and Rehabilitation Department aims at setting up such centres across the State involving training and placement agencies with a trailblazing record. Private and quasi-government agencies can join the drive and contribute their mite in the day-to-day operations of the centres like skill assessment, counselling, job-matching, interview scheduling, in-house basic skill training centre management and such others. The concept of employability means the process of changing the educated into an employable mode by identifying their skillsets; provide training and equipping them to be placed directly in to the workforce thereby enabling them to attain gainful employment throughout their working lives. It is a fact that the employability of our job seekers needs to be improved to avail jobs suitable to their profile. The process in Employability centre starts from the registration in the Employment Exchange. Once the registration is completed, the candidate will be requested to appear for an assessment test within two days. This will be conducted through a three hour test to assess their IQ level, skill set, reasoning ability, language skills, communication skills and over all personality. Once the assessment is over, the score sheet of the candidate will be disclosed to the candidate. Based on the scoring sheet, the candidate will be either directly referred to jobs available suiting to their profile or referred for basic/ high end training programme. For high end course, the candidate will be referred to VTPs (Vocational Training Providers, ITIs or other institutions based on the skill required. In a nutshell, following are the process that a registrant has to undergo in the employability centre. The Employability Centre by the Department of Employment and Training will be one of the prestigious projects of the Government to convert the unemployed youths of the district heralding a skill development revolution in the state of Kerala.
