📖 Dissection of a Murder — Jo Murray
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case and it is already impossible. The victim is a well respected judge. The defendant refuses to talk. And the prosecutor sitting on the other side? Her own husband.

This one had me in a chokehold from the very first page. The courtroom scenes are where this book truly shines. Watching a husband and wife go head to head in a murder trial while carrying all that history and hidden tension between them was absolutely gripping. The characters are layered, nobody is who they seem and just when you think you have it all figured out everything changes. An outstanding debut and an exceptional legal thriller. Highly recommend.

Lou ran away to France with her teacher when she was a teenager, thinking it was love. It wasn’t. Years later, she finds out he’s doing it again, this time to a girl named Chloe. So Lou goes back home to stop him. But Mike doesn’t let go that easily.

Three women. One predator. One past that refuses to stay buried.

Creepy, addictive and not at all what it seems. This story explores grooming, manipulation and the lasting impact of abuse. The fear, anger, disgust was completely felt while reading this. Not an easy read but definitely deserves a spot on your TBR.

Peggy Jenkins and her teenage son Samson live on a remote stretch of canal in the Midlands. Together they battle against the hardness and manipulation of the man they live with. To the outside world he is a husband and father. To them, he is a captor. Their lives are tightly controlled and if any perceived threat appears, their mooring is moved further down the canal, further away from civilisation. Until the day the power suddenly shifts, and nothing can be the same again.

This one got under my skin and stayed there. The narrowboat setting creates a claustrophobic and tense atmosphere and that feeling never lets up. The characters are living through exactly that, and the tension builds quietly until it becomes almost unbearable. Haunting, emotionally devastating, and impossible to put down.

📖 The Family Friend by Claire Douglas

When Imogen is told she’s inherited a country house near Bath, she thinks it must be a mistake. She last saw its owner, reclusive artist Dorothea Roe, sixteen years ago, during a tragic summer which changed her life for ever. But after discovering an old box with her name on it in Dorothea’s abandoned study, Imogen starts to believe the woman was trying to send her a secret message. And when rumours begin to swirl that Dorothea was murdered, she starts to suspect that this gift might not be the lifeline she thought it was.

This one gripped me from the very first page. The dual timeline structure, with Imogen in the present piecing together the mystery and Dorothea’s chapters moving backwards in time, was really well done and kept me constantly turning pages to connect the dots.

There are characters you absolutely love to hate, secrets stacked on secrets, and a finale that made the whole journey worth it. Not my favourite by her, but a solid and very readable thriller I would absolutely recommend.
