Ulster Unionist Deputy Leader and Agriculture Spokesperson Diana Armstrong MLA has marked the start of Rural Crime Week NI by warning that Northern Ireland is one of only a handful of regions where rural crime is rising, with losses reaching an estimated £2.2 million last year, a 24% increase, at a time when the UK-wide cost fell by 6%.

Ahead of Rural Crime Week NI, running from 7 to 11 September, Diana Armstrong MLA said:

“Rural crime cost Northern Ireland an estimated £2.2 million last year, a 24% rise, at a time when the cost across the United Kingdom as a whole fell by 6%. We are one of only a few regions going backwards. That should stop everyone in their tracks.

“Behind those figures are farm families who no longer feel safe in their own yard. The theft of a quad, a tractor or a GPS unit is not an inconvenience. It stops a business dead in the middle of a working week, and the fear it leaves behind lasts far longer than the insurance claim.

“What concerns me most is what we are not seeing. Recorded agricultural crime has been falling while losses rise, and the Ulster Farmers' Union is clear that many incidents never get reported at all. I understand the weariness behind that. When a farmer believes nothing will come of a call, they stop making it. The difficulty is that policing is resourced on the basis of recorded demand, so every unreported crime makes the case for rural policing weaker. My appeal this week is simple. Report it, every time, on 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

“Government has to meet farmers halfway. That means proper resourcing for rural policing, continued cooperation with An Garda Síochána on gangs that move stolen machinery across the border within hours, and a Rural Crime Partnership that delivers more than an annual awareness campaign. Our rural communities do their part. They are entitled to expect the same in return.”

📱 Have your say: Mobile Phone-Free Schools Consultation 📱

The Department of Education has launched a public consultation on measures to support mobile phone-free schools across Northern Ireland.

The consultation is seeking views on whether schools need extra support to create phone-free environments during the school day, and specifically whether new legislation should be introduced to restrict or prohibit pupils' use of mobile phones and smartphones in schools.

This is a really important issue for parents, pupils, teachers and school leaders, and I'd encourage as many people as possible from Fermanagh and South Tyrone to take part and make their voice heard.

🗓️ Consultation closes: 19 November 2026, 11.59pm

💬 Politics should be about delivery, not disagreement 💬

I think people are increasingly tired of politics that seems more interested in arguments than actually getting things done.

Northern Ireland faces some very real challenges.

Families are feeling the strain on household finances. Schools are dealing with increasing demands, and our businesses need the confidence and stability to invest, grow and create jobs.

None of those problems will be solved by another political shouting match.

As Ulster Unionists, we will always stand firmly for Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom. But I also believe one of the strongest things we can do for the Union is to make Northern Ireland work.

That means stable government. Better public services. A growing economy. Strong communities. And giving our young people a reason to see their future here.

Unionism should be confident enough to look forward, not constantly over its shoulder.

I want us to offer a positive, practical and confident Unionism – one that stands up for the Union while also getting on with the job of making Northern Ireland a better place to live, work and raise a family.

That’s the kind of politics I believe people want to see.

As I said on :
In an uncertain world, the United Kingdom keeps us safer.
NATO. A serious military. MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. Police mutual aid from every force in the UK.
Compare that with a defenceless Ireland.

𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗡 𝗙𝗘𝗜𝗡’𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗟 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗔𝗣𝗦𝗘𝗗.

The Prime Minister is right to make clear that a border poll is off the table.

Sinn Féin’s furious reaction is revealing. For decades, its leadership has kept supporters believing that Irish unity was imminent - just around the corner, over the next hill and within touching distance.

But look at the record:

2003: Martin McGuinness said a united Ireland was achievable by 2016.

2020: Mary Lou McDonald demanded a referendum by 2025, calling that timetable “deliverable and reasonable”.

2021: Gerry Adams predicted a border poll by 2024.

2022: Mary Lou McDonald declared the “end days of partition” and forecast a referendum by 2027.

2024: She claimed Irish unity was “within touching distance” and predicted referendums within six years.

Now: Sinn Féin has simply moved the promise again - to 2030.

It is always coming, but it never arrives.

Every deadline that passes is quietly abandoned. Every failed prediction is replaced by another. The dates change, the slogans change, but the deception remains the same.

Sinn Féin knows the legal test for calling a border poll. It also knows there is no evidence that this threshold has been met. Yet it continues to sell false hope to its supporters because permanent constitutional agitation is central to its political strategy.

The Prime Minister has confronted Sinn Féin with a reality it does not want to hear: there will be no border poll.

Northern Ireland’s future will not be determined by Sinn Féin slogans or manufactured deadlines. It will be secured by making this place more successful, prosperous and confident within the United Kingdom.

Sinn Féin should stop misleading its supporters and start being honest with them.

A border poll is off the table - but sadly there are thousands of empty chairs at the kitchen tables of citizens in our country - needless bloodshed.
