Motorists in County Monaghan are being reminded to take extra care on the roads as the deer breeding season, known as the rut, is now underway and will continue until early November.
During this period, deer are more active and there is an increased risk of road traffic collisions, particularly at dawn and dusk. Drivers should remain vigilant in areas such as woodlands, forests and upland routes where deer are known to cross roads.
✅ Reduce your speed where deer warning signs are in place
✅ Stay alert and be prepared to stop
✅ Never swerve to avoid a deer, as this could lead to a more serious collision
✅ Dip your headlights, as full beam can cause deer to freeze
✅ If one deer crosses the road, expect others to follow
✅ Do not approach an injured deer
If you are involved in a road traffic accident involving a deer, contact your local Gardaí immediately.
