Deireadh Fómhair, Autumn colours taking shape. Seasonal changes include the last of our bat activity as flurries of foraging activity abates and bats roost for winter, emerging again in Spring. October brings the peak movement period for Atlantic Salmon as they swim upstream for spawning. The deer rut is in action with most activity typically recorded in mid-October, some great Red Deer stags observed in Killarney National Park over the weekend. Later in the month we can expect to welcome our wintering bird populations, binoculars and notebooks at the ready! Seasonal changes bring exciting and sometimes predictable biodiversity events, a great time to explore our native habitats. and immerse yourself in nature. Fómhar Sona Duit. Rowan, also known as Mountain Ash or Caorthann as gaeilge. Beautiful red berries in full bloom and a great attraction for birds. There were Blue T**s, a Robin and Blackbird in the vicinity but no Mistle Thrush. During the winter, Mistle Thrush will defend a Rowan (or Holly) as a feeding territory. Rowan provides a nice burst of colour in the uplands and is native to Ireland. Kerry Development Partnership CLG County Council

Great new interpretation signage in Killarney National Park. This sign is sited at the entrance to Reenadinna Wood. Reenadinna Wood is a yew woodland, a Priority Annex I habitat on the EU Habitats Directive. The wood is one of the three best examples of a yew wood in Western Europe. The woodland covers an area of approximately 70 acres and the yew are circa 200 to 250 years old, although they are known to live for 2,000 years. Upon my brief walk by I noticed that all passers by stopped to read the signage and no doubt enjoyed the information presented on the board. Dare I say it's refreshing to have a drop of rain. Summer is a great time to immerse yourself in nature and embrace the fresh air. In Kerry, we are very fortunate to have a rich diversity of habitats such as our woodlands, peatlands, and beaches. Bird song is still in fashion, bats emerge to signify the close of the day, butterflies are a fluttering. It is more important than ever to nourish our natural heritage and to be proud to be of Kerry.

I was privileged to meet with Kilcummin Looking Good yesterday. The sense of pride and ownership in the village was humbling. The village's Biodiversity Community Park takes pride of place. The Park is easily accessible and is a sanctuary of peace. The Park was awash with butterflies, bees, and hoverflies making the most of the wide ranging plant species. Well done to Kilcummin Looking Good on valuing biodiversity and connecting people with nature. South Kerry Development Partnership CLG

We had a great few days with Kerry Library, specifically in Cahersiveen, Castleisland, Killarney, and Killorglin with local primary schools. The Biosphere Officer Brendan was delighted to present on the rich diversity of life in Kerry. The library facilities are top drawer and the staff are masters at their craft and welcoming! The children flexed their ecological knowledge in impressive style and we hope they enjoyed learning about the intricate value of Kerry's enviable natural heritage. Huge thank you to Kerry Library for facilitating the talks. Kerry County Council .library South Kerry Development Partnership CLG

The grounds of Killarney Library look terrific, awash with life. Bees aplenty yesterday with a particular favour for Red Clover. Red Clover is a hugely important native species for our pollinators. Delighted to see my favourite grass Crested Dog's Tail pop up also along with Oxeye Daisy, Cat's Ear, Dandelions, Cuckoo Flower, and Hawkbit.
