“This week, we bid farewell to Sir Garfield Sobers, an iconic legend of the cricket game, a hero of Barbadians everywhere, and an inspiration to us as to what we can achieve on the global stage with talent and a dedication to excellence.

Sir Garfield’s global acclaim is not rooted simply in his statistics, impressive though they are. It was his style and grace, his understanding of his craft and his demonstrated ability to problem solve in difficult circumstances that earned our respect. His panache, coupled with his resilience, when needed, captured our hearts. I was privileged to witness him play in the first three test matches that I watched at Kensington Oval, and I can attest to the joy that his mere presence brought to an adoring nation. His stellar performances in those games are etched in my memory.

Added to his cricketing qualities was his humility, a characteristic that endeared him to all with whom he came into contact. He clearly embodied the words in the poem If,
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, …
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

What a Man! May he rest in peace and his legacy inspire others to greatness.
On behalf of the Embassy of Barbados in Ireland, I offer condolences to his family, friends and a grieving nation.”
