Arigna Official page for Arigna Valley. Arigna is a picturesque village in North Roscommon set in the green valley of the Arigna River alongside Lough Allen.

Situated between Sliabh an Iarann (Iron Mountain) in the East, Kilronan Mountain in the West and Corrie Mountain to the North. It has beautiful scenery and unspoiled rugged landscapes. Its also has a wider community of Families, Houses and Townlands that stretch across three neighbouring Counties – Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo. Its steeped in history and folklore and the last coal mine in Ireland was here in Arigna. The Arigna area has a long tradition of mining which dates back to the 1600s when Charles Coote established iron works at Crevelea and Arigna. Charcoal, made from local timber, was used in the smelting process; however, as local timber supplies reduced, it was necessary to find an alternative fuel. It was through this search that coal was discovered in the area. In 1788 the O’Reilly brothers founded an iron foundry where, for the first time in Ireland, coal was used in the smelting process. Iron mining actually turned out to be less than successful in Arigna and, following many attempts to salvage it, the iron works closed permanently in 1838. Coal mining, however, continued to provide employment in Arigna. In fact, Arigna became a relatively affluent area through times of extreme poverty elsewhere, because of the constant availability of employment for all the men of the area and indeed surrounding areas. When the O Reilly brothers went bankrupt the iron works were managed by operators including the Arigna Iron and Coal Joint Stock Company. The Tenison family arrived in North Connacht in the 18th century and owned extensive mining rights across North Roscommon. In addition to the Tenisons a number of local families and companies played an important role in the coal mining industry. Over the next 150 years coal was used to heat homes and hospitals, and to power steam engines. The ESB opened the Arigna Power Station in 1958, the first major power generating station in Connacht. By this period the supply of top grade coal in Arigna was used and he station was built specifically to burn the semi bituminous coal with its high ash content. At its height, the power station burned 55,000 tons of coal annually and employed 60 people directly. However, from the outset, one of the primary reasons behind its construction was to secure hundreds of jobs in the local mining industry. By the 1970’s 65% of the coal mined in Arigna was burned at the Power Station. Arigna is made up of 37 Townlands as follows: Aghabehy, Aghafin, Altagowlan, Altoghil, Ardcollum, Carrownalt, Corgornam,Cornagee, Crosshill, Derrinavoggy, Derrinisky, Derrynagallion, Giddaun, Glasdrumman, Greagh, Greaghnafarna, Greaghcorra,Greaghnaleava beg, Greaghnaleava more, Greaghnaglogh, Gubbarudda, Kilronan Mountain, Knockadryan, Lislea,Lurgan,Mullaun,Mountallen,Rover Upper, Rover Lower, Seltanneveeny, Strabraggan,Strabra, Srananooan, Tawlaght, Timpaun,Tullynahaw, and Tullytawen. This week’s recipe:

Braised Red Cabbage (Riverford)

A good k**b of lard, duck or goose fat, beef dripping, or butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 red cabbage, quartered, cored and shredded
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
3 tbsp c***r vinegar
250ml chicken or vegetable stock
1 tbsp flour
4 tbsp crème fraîche
1 tsp English mustard powder
2 apples, (Bramleys if you can get them) grated
salt and pepper

Heat the oven to 150ºC/gas 2.
Heat the fat in a heavy casserole, then gently sweat the onion for 10 minutes, until softened.
Add the red cabbage, sugar, vinegar and stock, season with salt and pepper, cover and cook in the oven for 1 and a half hours.
Mix the flour with the crème fraîche and mustard powder in a large bowl to a smooth paste.
Remove the casserole from the oven and stir in the apple and crème fraîche mixture. Cook on the hob for 10 minutes over a low heat, stirring regularly, to heat the crème fraîche.
Check the seasoning. The fresh acidity of the grated apple should come through.

Good luck everyone 💚

How lucky are we all here in Arigna to have such a dedicated committee working so hard to improve and enhance our community. Thank you to the Area Arigna committee and all involved in this great work 💚

📢

The AREA Committee are delighted to share another significant milestone in the development of Arigna Community Park.

Construction on the new dressing rooms and public toilets will commence next week! This phase is starting later than originally planned, but the delay was necessary to revise the design so that public toilets can be accessed 24 hours a day—a feature that required additional planning and approval.

This progress has only been made possible through the support of the Roscommon LEADER Programme, private donations from individuals with Arigna connections and the incredible generosity of everyone who contributed to our ongoing AREA Lotto fundraiser. Your support continues to drive this project forward.

We also extend our sincere thanks to all local clubs who have been renting the astro facility. The income generated is playing a vital role in meeting our matched‑funding requirements and covering essential running costs such as insurance and electricity.

Work will also begin in the coming weeks on extending the current walking track. This upgrade will be completed in time for the long, dark winter evenings—so there’ll be no excuse not to get out and enjoy the fully lit track.

The extension will be delivered in two phases:

Phase 1 will be completed in coming weeks with phase 2 once the dressing room facility is completed.

Behind the scenes, work continues on finalising the playground design and appointing a contractor. The target is to have this exciting addition completed in early 2027, bringing even more amenities for everyone in our community to enjoy.

The astro and walking track remain free of charge for public use, and this will not change as new facilities are added. From the beginning, our vision has been to create an inclusive recreational space with something for everyone. With works commencing next week, we are firmly on track to deliver the fully completed Community Park by Q2 2027.
