What’s it really like to spend a week at sea as a marine scientist? 🚢🔬

This summer, recent Marine Science graduate Seoda joined the RV Tom Crean on Ireland’s annual Underwater TV Survey, helping scientists collect vital information used to assess Nephrops (Dublin Bay prawn) stocks and support sustainable fisheries management.

🌊 Through the Our Shared Ocean programme, the Marine Institute welcomed two students from St. George's University, Grenada, to investigate how better governance can support the sustainable use of Sargassum seaweed and reduce coastal pollution in the Caribbean.

Their research highlights how international collaboration, evidence-based policy and knowledge exchange can strengthen ocean governance, support resilient blue economies, and create opportunities for the next generation of marine leaders. 🌎💙

🌊 Atlantic Summit Galway 2026 concludes with a shared vision for Europe’s ocean future

Today, the international ocean community came together behind the Atlantic Summit Galway 2026 Outcome Statement, a collective commitment to strengthening ocean knowledge, deepening Atlantic cooperation, and investing in the next generation of ocean leaders.

Hosted by the Marine Institute, University of Galway and Atlantic Technological University , the Summit brought together more than 350 policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, innovators, educators and early-career ocean professionals from across Europe and the wider Atlantic region to shape a sustainable, resilient and competitive ocean future.

Key messages from the Atlantic Summit Galway 2026 Outcome Statement:

🔬🌊 Make ocean knowledge a strategic investment priority
Ocean knowledge, including observations, data, research, innovation and infrastructure, is essential for Europe's competitiveness, resilience and maritime security.

🤝 Strengthen Atlantic partnerships and cooperation
Deeper collaboration across the Atlantic basin is critical to addressing shared environmental, economic and geopolitical challenges while accelerating innovation and effective ocean governance.

👩‍🔬🌟Invest in skills and leadership
Empowering the next generation of ocean professionals through education, training and mentorship will be essential to delivering Europe's ocean ambitions.

Together, these priorities reinforce a clear message: Europe's prosperity, sustainability and resilience depend on its ability to generate, share and apply ocean knowledge through strategic investment, strong partnerships and skilled people.

🐟 Your voice can help protect our oceans.

Marine Beacon is a Horizon Europe project tackling one of the biggest challenges facing marine biodiversity: bycatch.

The new Marine Beacon Digital Platform is an open space where researchers, fishers, policymakers, conservationists and members of the public can share knowledge, ask questions and contribute ideas.

We are currently looking for contributions on:

🌊 Successful bycatch reduction initiatives
🦈 Risks facing basking sharks
📢 Better ways to raise public awareness about bycatch

Whether you work in the sector or simply care about marine life, your perspective matters.
