Good morning everyone and a very warm Irish welcome to you all here at the Kennedy Homestead.
What a beautiful autumn morning to arrive at a place that carries so much history, family, and meaning. We are especially delighted to welcome our visitors McGinley Coach Travel.

As you stand here today, you are standing on the very ground where the Kennedy family story began
- a humble home in rural Wexford that would become connected to one of the most famous families in American History.

But behind the names, the history and the headlines, there is something much more personal here: FAMILY. There were dreams, hopes, hard work, laughter, farewells as like so many Irish families, the difficult decision to leave in search of a new life.

From this small Homestead, a journey began that would cross the Atlantic and eventually reach the White House.
Never would Patrick Kennedy and his wife Bridget
Murphy, could have ever imagined where the journey would have lead.

In the mid-1800s my great-great-great-grandfather Patrick Kennedy embarked on his journey to the US. Leaving all he knew behind in southeast Ireland for the promise of the American dream, writes Catherine Kennedy.

When he came to the US, he worked as a barrel-maker. Patrick’s wife was also an Irish immigrant and they had multiple daughters and two sons.

Their sons would become established businessmen and one of them would also become a well-known politician. Their daughters would become wives and mothers playing vital roles in their husband’s successes.

#1963

On the morning of September 15, 1963, four members of the Ku Klux Klan planted over a dozen sticks of dynamite under the front steps of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. When the bomb exploded just before 10:30 a.m., 22 people in the church were injured, and four of the girls in the basement were killed: Addie Mae Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.

In the days that followed, many Americans wrote to President Kennedy with their reactions to the bombing. These letters are in the archives at the JFK Library.
