On this day 50 years ago three men lost their lives in an airplane crash on the Galtee mountains. Yesterday, friends and family walked to the crash site and today they gathered at the airplane monument on the Black Road to remember Jimmy Byrne, Tom Gannon and Dick O’Reilly.

There was no mountain rescue in the area in 1976, it was local farmers and hill walkers that helped in the aftermath of the crash. It was decided then, that a mountain rescue team was needed and in 1977, SEMRA was founded.

It was a privilege to be part of the commemoration today and yesterday, to meet the families and share time on the hill with them.

SEMRA celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, in those 50 years we have been called out to help people in trouble on the hill nearly 900 times.

Another busy day for SEMRA! Team training this morning at Ballykeefe Quarry to practice rope skills, technical rescues and setting up anchor points. Not long after everyone was home a call came in at 15:52 from An Garda Síochána to assist a walker with a lower leg injury on the Coumshingaun ridge. Team members once again headed out and made their way to Kilclooney. The first team members reached the injured walkers location 17:28. They assessed the injury and used a vacuum splint to stabilise the injured leg and administered pain relief. The cloud cover was down so the plan was to extract the casualty on the stretcher, however Rescue 115 became available and the cloud lifted sufficiently for them to be able to assist. The casualty was transferred onto R115 at 19:34 for onward transport to hospital. Stand down issued at 20:53 with everyone safely off the hill. A long day for our team members.
