Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue Providing 24/7 emergency search and rescue service to the community since 1986. Registered charity. Limerick, and inland to Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick.

Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue was founding in 1986 to provide a rescue service to the locality of North Kerry and West Limerick. The unit, manned by 35 volunteers, is situated on the Ladies Beach in Ballybunion and operates as a declared resource to the Irish Coast Guard. BSCR operate on 7 minute readiness for the D Class and 12 minutes for the Atlantic 75, always available on 24 hour pager alert. The unit is the busiest inshore CRBI unit in Ireland with an average of 25 to 30 callouts a year. Equipped with a D class inflatable boat, an Atlantic 21 boat and a new Atlantic 75 RIB, BSCR covers the coast and Shannon Estuary from Ballyheigue, Co Kerry to Foynes, Co. Having a declared night time capability also means we over lap with neighboring services to cover that area in the hours of darkness. As well as providing 24x7 Sea & Cliff Rescue, the volunteers also provide First Aid and Ambulance assistance at a handful of horse races and other events around the Ballybunion area. Our volunteers are very well trained in all aspects of rescue work up to an including the level of EMT

We rely on public donations and all year round fund raising to raise the €45,000 needed to keep the service afloat each year. None of our members are paid and all give their time freely. As an independent rescue service, Ballybunion Rescue operates as part of C.R.B.I. The Community Rescue Boats Ireland (C.R.B.I.) are a nationwide group of independent voluntary rescue boats declared available to the Coast Guard who respond to emergencies in their area of responsibility on a 24/365 basis. Other units include Cahore - Co.Wexford, Tramore -Co.Waterford, Bunmahon - Co.Waterford, Bantry - Co.Cork, Derrynane - Co.Kerry, Banna - Co.Kerry, Kilkee - Co.Clare, Limerick City, Corrib/Mask - Co.Galway and Schull - Co Cork. We are soon to have another unit, Ballinskellig CRBI.

A massive thank you to the team from Tralee-based SMBC who got stuck in for a beach clean in Ballybunion recently! 🌊🧤

As part of SMBC’s volunteering challenge, the team also had the opportunity to hear first-hand about the work of Ballybunion Sea Rescue and the vital role our volunteers play in keeping our local coastline safe.

The volunteering challenge has also provided valuable financial support to the Sea Rescue — so it was great to see that support come full circle, with the SMBC team giving their time back on the beach.

Fair play to everyone involved, and thanks again for the fantastic support! 💙

Last Summer market tomorrow so please get down to support the fantastic vendors that have raised so much money for us during the season!!

You might even see a few of us there if you want to pop by for a chat!

It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow is our final summer market of the season. We would like to thank each and every one of you who have helped us make this our best year yet. You coming in and buying from our fantastic vendors have helped us to raise €5000 for Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue. These people provide an absolutely amazing service and are a vital part of the community. It has been our pleasure to support them and we look forward to working with them again in the future.
We would also like to say a massive thank you to Una and Greg from Mcmunns Ballybunion. Without them the markets would not have been able to run. They have been so helpful and supportive and we really appreciate it.
We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. We will be open from 10.30 till 3.

CALLOUT 1 - 11/08/2026 - Yesterday afternoon at 3pm members were alerted to a kayaker group who were not making progress back to shore due to a strong southerly breeze. Coordinated by MRSC Valentia, a crew assembled and monitored the kayakers from the beach as local Lifeguards used their paddleboard to reach the group. Lifeguards coached the group and assisted them safely back to shore. No further action was required from the crew but great work was done by the Lifeguards.

CALLOUT 2 - 12/08/2026 - This morning at 11:45 hours our pagers were activated by MRSC to a report of a man in difficulty in the water on the Ladies beach. The IB1 was readied for service and proceeded to the waterline. As the boat was being launched at 11:51hrs, MRSC confirmed that the man had made it to the safety of the shore. The man was met by our members and assessed by one of our EMTs. Medically stable, he was provided with advice on submersion incidents and was taken home by family. It should be noted that this incident occurred before the start of the Lifeguards shift at 12midday.

Commenting this morning, PRO for Ballybunion Sea & Cliff Rescue Service said “It is vitally important to remain within your depth and not to swim alone. This mornings call involved a man who was within his depth, however a strong rip current meant he couldn’t walk back into shore as wave height increased as the tide turned. If you see someone in trouble, and even if you are in doubt, always call 999/112 as was correctly done in this case”.
