On this Day:

16th of September 1945 - Death of John Count McCormack

World-famous tenor was born at The Bawn, Athlone. He was granted Papal countancy for services to music. John Count McCormack’s first public performance took place at Father Matthew Hall in Athlone, now the Luan Gallery, where a bronze bust stands. A full-sized statue of him is also located outside the Civic Centre in John McCormack Square.

On this day:

8th of September 1893 - Second Home Rule Bill rejected by the Lords

These historic clay pipes are found in our collection. In the 19th century, the principal centre for Irish clay pipe manufacturing was Knockcroghery, a village famous for creating pipes that carried political slogans. Many of these pipes were stamped with phrases in favour of Home Rule, allowing everyday people to smoke their to***co while quietly displaying their political allegiances.

Last year, we shared some photos of slides from the 1999–2008 Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, and today we want to share a few more.

This time, we are featuring a direct comparison of the Castle Keep. Isn't it fascinating to see how the same monument has changed over time?

Art and history came together at our plein air drawing event for Threads of Place, where local historian Gearoid O'Brien shared the rich history of the Athlone Workhouse and Abbey Graveyard area prior to our artists working hard and creating some truly striking.

It was not possible to capture everything from the amazing event that was the 'Checkmate! Epic Live Chess Battle Between the Connaught and Leinster Sides' of Athlone on Sunday 23rd August. So at least with this short video we commemorate some of the moments this fun filled Heritage Week event ✨

Our event was kindly supported by the Heritage Council under the IWTN Interpretation Fund 2026.
