Lam Tung-pang’s ingenuity has given the Hong Kong House a facelift despite the tough situation in this year, turning the space into an artwork 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘧-𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦. Under Japan’s travel ban, the artist cannot travel to Tsunan, where the House is located. Wonder how Lam has been able to accustom himself to local customs and culture and continue with his creation under such limitations? The title of the work may tell you more!
Reflecting on the creative process of 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘧-𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, Lam describes in the exhibition: “Half a step at home, and half a step facing the world.” While staying at Hong Kong, he was able to identify some points of interest and the stories behind from local lifestyle shots with subjects ranging from Japanese sliding doors to low side tables at an old house, and from patterned tableware in a cupboard to traditional tools used in festivals. All these elements, however trivial they might seem, have served as a source of inspiration for Lam, leading to the fruition of the installation work 𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘧-𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦.
