The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) joins the rest of Africa in commemorating African Liberation Day. Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of African heroes and heroines who fought for freedom, justice, unity, and self-determination across the continent.

As we reflect on our shared history, let us renew our commitment to peace, democracy, good governance, and sustainable development for a stronger and more united Africa.

Ahead of and throughout the entire 2026 Supplementary Voter Registration exercise, the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) launched intensive nationwide sensitization campaigns. These initiatives were designed to spur mass and inclusive participation, as well as provide the much-needed information and knowledge on the registration processes, procedures, qualifications, and required documentation to ensure a seamless, orderly, and peaceful exercise.

As a grand finale to this crucial electoral intervention, the NCCE embarked on a significant collaboration with the National Youth Council - The Gambia, with valuable support from CRS The Gambia. Through this strategic partnership, a Nationwide Civic and Voter Awareness Campaign Caravan was deployed across all administrative regions of The Gambia.

The high-impact caravan commenced its journey in the North Bank Region, traversing the length and breadth of the country before successfully concluding in Banjul. Throughout the tour, the caravan actively engaged with local communities, youth organizations, women’s groups, traditional leaders, and other grassroots stakeholders.

These interactive sessions emphasized the importance of collaboration, informed participation, and the vital role every citizen plays in the consolidation of our democracy and the maintenance of peace in The Gambia.

𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 (𝐒𝐒𝐑) 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE], in collaboration with the Office of National Security (ONS), The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the CSO Coalition on SSR, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), conducted a nationwide Community Awareness Campaign on Security Sector Reform [SSR].

The 12-day outreach campaign covered all regions of the country, holding two community engagement sessions in each region:

📍 NBR: Kerewan & Ngain Sanjal
📍 LRR: Mansakonko & Dumbuto
📍 WCR: Sintet & Sibanor
📍 GBA: Kanifing & Banjul

As part of the engagement, Mr. Ansumana Ceesay, Program Manager at NCCE, delivered an insightful presentation on “Community Oversight, Community Participation, Trust Building, and Accountability in the SSR Process.” His session highlighted the critical role communities play in supporting transparent, accountable, and people-centered security sector reforms.

The activity also featured evening radio programmes to expand public outreach and ensure wider citizen participation and awareness on SSR issues.

The initiative marked an important step towards strengthening public awareness , inclusive participation and trust between communities and security institutions in The Gambia

Advancing Civic Awareness for Peaceful and Inclusive Communities

The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with WAVE The Gambia, successfully conducted a 7-day interface dialogue in communities of Bwiam, Bakau, Jabang, Gunjur, Bafuloto, Sanyang, and Manjai.

The initiative focused on promoting awareness on Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB), hate speech prevention, social cohesion, torture prevention, and strengthening Police-Community dialogue in hotspot areas.

Representing the NCCE, Mr Philip A. Gomez, Program Officer, delivered an insightful presentation on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the concept of hate speech. His session highlighted the importance of protecting fundamental rights and examined how hate speech can fuel discrimination, violence, and tensions within communities.

The dialogue also brought together key institutions including the Gambia Police Force, ADRS, and ONS, reinforcing a collaborative approach toward civic education and community engagement.
This important initiative aimed to empower communities with civic knowledge, encourage active citizen participation, and promote national development through peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding.
