Implementation of the Regional Landscape
Recovery Initiative – North Bank Region

The implementation of the Regional Landscape Recovery Initiative – North Bank Region commenced in Bali Mandinka and Kerr Jarga Jobe, marking the beginning of Component 1: Agroforestry Support and Advancement. The component aims to improve community livelihoods and resilience through sustainable agroforestry and land management practices, while contributing to ecosystem restoration and increased tree cover.

The activity was jointly implemented by the Department of Forestry, North Bank Region, in collaboration with CorpsAfrica and U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. Ten farmers, five from each community, were identified and supported to plant different tree species on their farmlands. In addition, five women farmers from Bali Mandinka were supported to plant trees within their home compounds to promote women's participation and leadership in tree-growing activities.

Approximately 150 tree seedlings were planted across the two communities, with tree guards provided to protect the seedlings from stray livestock and improve their survival.

The implementation was led by the Regional Forestry Officer, North Bank Region, Mr. Yaya F. Nyassi, who pioneered the initiative with the support of the Regional Forestry Extension Team. The successful implementation also benefited significantly from the active collaboration of Isatou Jobe, CorpsAfrica Volunteer, and Jarra Demba, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, in Bali Mandinka, as well as Hoja Mbow, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, in Kerr Jarga Jobe. Their combined efforts, alongside the forestry team and participating community members, contributed greatly to the successful commencement of the initiative.

With the continued increase in seasonal rainfall, planting activities have significantly accelerated across various communities within the North Bank Region. The favorable weather conditions have provided an optimal window for reforestation and agricultural expansion. Forestry field officers, operating within their respective administrative circles, are actively leading the coordination of tree planting efforts. A primary focus of these activities is the establishment and maintenance of Agroforestry Gardens through life fencing.
Communities engaged in this week's tree planting activities include:

Kerr Seleh
Jamagen Joka
Medina Sering Mass
Bakindik
Ngain Sanjal (Mix Farming Center)
Illiassa

These ongoing efforts represent a vital step toward strengthening the region’s ecological resilience and supporting the livelihoods of local residents. As of now, over 4000 seedlings were planted across different communities in the past One week.

This morning, the forestry field officers of the Farafeni Administrative Circle, led by AC Head Alieu Bangura, conducted a tree-planting exercise at the Ngain Sanjal Women’s Garden.

The primary objective of the activity is to establish a natural life fence to protect and enhance long-term vegetable production for the women of Ngain Sanjal. In addition, the exercise aims to promote soil conservation, and engage the community in sustainable land-management practices that support local livelihoods.

This activity marks the beginning of the Agroforestry Garden life-fencing initiative of the ROOTS Project, implemented through its Forestry Focal Point and targeting twenty-two (22) gardens across the North Bank Region this season.

The Regional Forestry Office NBR extends its sincere gratitude to the community of Ngain Sanjal for their large turnout and active participation, and thanks the ROOTS Project for its continued collaboration and support, which have been instrumental in making this initiative possible.

On 2 August 2026, field staff from the Ndugu Kebbeh Administrative Circle of the Department of Forestry (NBR) coordinated a seed‑sowing exercise at the Chamen Bai Dam Community Forest. The intervention was carried out in partnership with the Chamen Community Forest Committee and other members of the local community. During the operation, approximately 10,000 seeds of Cordyla africana were sown across degraded portions of the forest with the aim of restoring native vegetation, enhancing biodiversity, and improving soil stability and watershed function.

This restoration activity forms part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate degraded communal landscapes and to strengthen community engagement in sustainable forest management. The Department through the North Bank Regional Forestry Office thanks the Chamen Community Forest Committee and participating residents for their collaboration and looks forward to monitoring seedling emergence, providing follow‑up technical support, and scaling similar interventions where needed to support long‑term ecosystem recovery.

The Regional Forestry Directorate of North Bank Region in collaboration with the Peace Corp Volunteer for Mademba K***a (Lower Niomi District) have successfully conducted a tree planting exercise at Bakalarr Upper Basic School. The exercise was jointly implemented by the teaching staff of the school and Agricultural Science students. The exercise was part of Regional Forestry Office's efforts to enhance environmental education and promote a conducive leaning environment for students.
