π§― Crucial Fire Safety: Using the RIGHT Extinguisher! π₯π‘
It's absolutely essential for every seafarer to know the different types of fire extinguishers onboard and what they're used for! π€ Each one is specifically designed for a particular kind of fireβbe it wood, oil, electrical, or cooking fat. Using the wrong extinguisher can not only be ineffective but can actually make things much, much worse! β οΈ
Dry Powder Extinguisher π΅
Color: Often has a blue band or label.
Best For:
Class A (solids like wood, paper) πͺ΅π₯
Class B (flammable liquids like petrol, oil) β½π₯
Class C (flammable gases like propane, methane) π¨π₯
Electrical Fires (Class E) β‘π₯
Action: Works by smothering the fire, creating a barrier between the fuel and oxygen.
Note: Can leave a messy residue and reduce visibility.
2. Foam Extinguisher π¦
Color: Often has a cream band or label.
Best For:
Class A (solids) πͺ΅π₯
Class B (flammable liquids) β½π₯
Action: Creates a foam blanket that smothers the fire and cools the fuel.
Note: Not suitable for electrical fires.
3. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Extinguisher β«
Color: Often has a black band or label.
Best For:
Class B (flammable liquids) β½π₯
Electrical Fires (Class E) β‘π₯
Action: Displaces oxygen, smothers the fire, and also provides a cooling effect.
Note: Leaves no residue, making it ideal for sensitive equipment. Be careful of cold discharge horn! π₯Ά
4. Water Extinguisher π΄
Color: Entirely red casing.
Best For:
Class A (solids like wood, paper, textiles) πͺ΅π₯
Action: Cools the burning material, taking away the heat element of the fire triangle.
Note: NEVER use on electrical fires (risk of electrocution) or flammable liquid/grease fires (can spread them). β‘π«
5. Wet Chemical Extinguisher π‘
Color: Often has a yellow band or label.
Best For:
Class F (cooking oils and fats, like in deep fat fryers) π³π₯
Can also be used on Class A fires.
Action: Creates a cooling, soapy layer that smothers the fire and prevents re-ignition.
Note: Essential for galley and kitchen areas where cooking oils are used.
Remember, always ensure you're trained in fire extinguisher use and know the fire classes! Stay safe and prepared! π₯
