YKMA ORGANIZES A CLEAN-UP EXERCISE IN SOMANYA

To promote environmental cleanliness,prevent sanitation-related diseases, and improve public health outcomes which align with the Government's National Sanitation Day initiative,on Saturday, 7th March, 2026, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive(MCE), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Abdul-Hussein A. Rasheed, stakeholders, and the Environmental Health Department organized a clean-up exercise from Djaba road junction to Akweteman.

The exercise led to desilting choked gutters, and clearing bushes. Also, the Assembly made DRIP machines available which cleared heaped refuse at stadium(Akweteman).

Hon. Akumatey expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Assembly Memebers for the massive turnout of their community members. He also commended the residents for their sacrifice to ensure that their communities are free from filth. He emphasized that sanitation is a shared responsibility and called on all households in Yilo Krobo Municipality to keep up the momentum to ensure a clean a healthy municipality.

YILO KROBO MUNICIPALITY COMMEMORATES GHANA'S 69TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

On Friday, 6th March, 2026,the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, collaborated with the Municipal Education Directorate, and all the security agencies in the Municipality to celebrate the 69TH independence anniversary at the Akutunya lorry station,Somanya.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Akumatey, eulogized our forefathers whose courage, sacrifice,resilience, and unyielding determination gave birth to the sovereign nation, Ghana, we proudly call our home. He emphasized that the theme for the 69TH independence anniversary, "Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope" is a clarion call to reflect the true meaning of independence as Ghana's independence is not a static achievement but it demands deliberate action and shared commitment to our national transformation.

Hon. Akumatey added that the implementation of government's life transforming flagship initiatives such Adwuma Wura, Feed Ghana, and National Apprenticeship economically empowers citizens and serves as a catalyst for income generation, agro-processing, sustainable development, skills acquisition, and addressing youth unemployment by turning job seekers to job creators. In concluding his address, he appealed to the residents of Yilo Krobo Municipality to take good care of the infrastructure the government is building. He thanked the participating Schools, dignitaries present, heads of department, all and sundry for making the 69TH independence anniversary a memorable one.

Mr. Samuel Tetteh Odjidja who represented the Municipal Director of Education advised the youth to stay away from drug abuse. He added that the Yilo Krobo Municipal Education Directorate has tasked all head teachers to form boys class inter-schools and strengthen the existing girls class to provide a structured environment that fosters leadership, academic success, and a healthy lifestyle while reducing involvement in risky behaviours.

*YKMA HOLDS A JOINT-STAKEHOLDER MEETING WITH DECENTRALIZED AND NON-DECENTRALIZED DEPARTMENTS/ORGANIZATIONS*

Pursuant to Section 81(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016, ACT 936 which mandates Departments of a District to collaborate and cooperate with non-decentralized departments, state-owned enterprises, and public corporations operating in the district to ensure a coordinated approach to the development and management of the District to avoid duplication and ensure a more convenient and cost-effective implementation of programmes and projects, on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2026, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, acting as the Chairman, and the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Abdul-Hussein A. Rasheed, convened this important meeting.

The Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) warmly welcomed the astute technocrats and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to them for their stellar performances in their various fields.

The Chairman presiding over the meeting, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, invited heads of participating departments(decentralized and Non-decentralized) and public corporations to outline their 2026 action plans.
🗣️The Municipal NADMO Director, Mr. Prince N. Odoom, outlined proactive measures including demolition of dilapidated structures posing as death traps to ensure prevention not reaction.
🗣️The Somanya District Police Commander, Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, highlighted measures such as creation of police snapshot points at vantage places and intensifying patrol to combat crime and protect property. He disclosed that on 15th February, 2026, the police intelligence foiled robbery attack in the Municipality. He added that they are doing community engagement as sexual offenses such as defilement, r**e, sextortion are on the rise in the Municipality
🗣️The Asesewa ECG District Manager, Mr. Samuel Acquaye, announced vegetation control to avert power outage, community sensitization on safe use of electricity, provision of site plan and building permit before meters are fixed, among others as his plans.

On challenges being faced by state-owned enterprises and public corporations, both the ECG District Manager in Asesewa and the Engineer in Somanya disclosed that there will not be major developments in the Municipality due to lack of resources. They cited debts owned by state institutions and customers, illegal connections and supply of power, political meters, farming under their lines, fake data among others as major challenges. The District Manager of ECG in Asesewa revealed that out of 31,000 customers, only 3,000 regularly pay bills. He added that over 15,000 customers provided fake phone numbers.

On mapping out various strategies to strengthen collaboration and cooperation between departments of the Assembly and other public organizations, the following decisions were taken:
▶️Collaboration between ECG and the Physical Planning Department in lay outs.
▶️Collaboration between the police service, works department, and NADMO during demolitions.
▶️Collaboration between ECG and works department to authenticate site plan and receipts of building permit.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Akumatey, the Chairman of the meeting, offered the following plausible ideas:
✅Merging of plans and time lines of decentralized and Non-decentralized departments or public corporations to avoid duplication and waste of resources.
✅Public Education to sensitize the residents on programmes and projects to avoid resistance and rejection by the residents.
✅Following all due process to avoid legal repercussion and litigation.
✅Regular reading of newly fixed postpaid electricity meters.
✅Internal resolution of issues before reporting them to higher authorities outside the Municipality.

The Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr Abdul-Hussein A. Rasheed, stressed on the intersectoral collaboration and cooperation. He thanked all the technocrats for honouring the invitation.

NYA DISTRIBUTES EQUIPMENT TO BENEFICIARIES OF NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

On Tuesday, 24th February, 2026, the National Youth Authority(NYA), under the auspices of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA), distributed items to the first batch of beneficiaries of National Apprenticeship Programme(NAP). The beneficiaries comprised ten(10) Mastercraft persons and fifty(50) apprentices. The event was graced by the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, and the Eastern Regional Coordinator of National Apprenticeship Programme(NAP), Mr. Emmanuel Asante.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the president of the republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, for fulfilling his promise to empower the youth through Apprenticeship Programmes. He stated that when the portal was opened for applicants to register for the programme, Six hundred and forty-three(643) apprentices and Two hundred and seventy-one(271) Mastercraft persons registered. 50 apprentices and 10 Mastercraft persons were selected out of the 643 and 271 respectively. He advised the Mastercraft persons to take good care of the equipment and also admonished the apprentices to accord their Masters and Madams with utmost respect as they are playing pivotal roles to make them self-reliant in the future.

The Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, thanked the president of the republic for his commitment towards youth empowerment. He stated, "Talent without right equipment is untapped potential." He advised the beneficiaries to use the equipment to unearth their potentials through this Apprenticeship Programme.

The Eastern Regional Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mr. Emmanuel Asante, revealed that out of the Ten thousand(10,000) Persons used to pilot the programme nationwide, he was able to secure One thousand, two hundred(1,200) for Eastern Region of which Yilo Krobo Municipality is the second highest beneficiaries in Region. He continued that the 50 apprentices will be shared among the 10 Mastercraft persons and each apprentice will receive monthly stipend while three thousand cedis(GHS 3,000.00) per head will be paid to the Mastercraft persons as apprenticeship fees. He added that each Mastercraft person who sews will receive 5 hand-sewing machines, complete set of knitting machine, complete set of industrial machine, among others. He emphasized that the set of equipment will be handed over to the Mastercraft persons not the apprentices. However, brand new set of equipment will be distributed to the apprentices as start-up kits at the end of their apprenticeship. He reminded the Mastercraft persons that the apprentices will be under their care for twelve(12) months so they should eschew asking the apprentices to run unproductive errands for them. He pleaded with the Non-beneficiaries to exercise patience as the number of beneficiaries will be increased from 10,000 to 100,000 nationwide so more Yilo people will benefit in the second batch.

Mr. John Kissiedu, the Municipal Coordinator of National Youth Authority(NYA), expressed his profound gratitude to the Regional Coordinator for selecting Yilo Krobo among the first batch of beneficiaries of the National Apprenticeship Programme in the region. He cautioned the beneficiaries to use the start-up kits productively.

MCE OF YKMA COMMISSIONS COMMUNITY SEED BANK AT ABREWANKOR

On Monday, January 26,2026, the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, joined the Chiefs and Queens of Abrewankor, NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors to commission a beautiful edifice to conserve indigenous seeds for the future that will empower farmers to secure crop diversity

The Chairman of the event, Nene Addey Tetteh I, the chief of Abrewankor, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to NUS Network Ghana and its partners for choosing Abrewankor as a site to erect this unprecedented project in the Municipality.

Dr. Daniel Nyadanu, the NUS Network Ghana Coordinator, stated that the Abrewankor community seed bank is the second seed bank to be opened in Ghana, but it has been upscaled. He added that the first seed bank was inaugurated in Mangoase in Akuapem North Municipality in the Eastern Region. He outlined the modern ways of conserving crops on the farm and sustaining seeds for posterity at the seed bank. He expressed his appreciation to donors and partners such as the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana, Anton Jurgens Fonds, Bioversity International & CIAT, and Ghana Food Movement.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, emphasized that access to quality seeds is fundamental to food security and eradication of hunger. He continued that the seed bank will contribute meaningfully to Ghana's commitment towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 2.
He outlined the following among others as the key objectives of the Abrewankor Community Seed Bank Project:
✅Preservation and protection of indigenous seeds from extinction
✅Improvement of access to quality planting materials
✅Promotion of climate-smart agriculture
✅Crop Biodiversity Security
✅Seeds affordability.
In concluding his remarks, he thanked NUS Network Ghana and its partners, and called on farmers, traditional authorities, farmer-based organizations, and all stakeholders to work together to protect and manage the facility as a shared community asset.

The Agric Director of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Mr. Benjamin Bortey Alabi,spoke extensively about the health benefits of consuming indigenous foods. He added that the conservation of indigenous seeds at the community seed bank complements the theme used for the celebration of 41st National Farmers' day in December 2025, *"FEED GHANA, EAT GHANA, SECURE THE FUTURE."*

The Chairman of the Abrewankor Community Seed Bank, Mr. Daniel Tetteh, expressed his enthusiasm and appreciation to NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors for establishing the seed bank facility in Abrewankor. He appealed for computers to electronically keep records, motorbike and tricycle(aboboyaa) to ply non-motorable farm roads for the collection of seeds. He also appealed for gari processing machines to provide job opportunities for the residents and also to avoid post harvest losses.

In his closing remarks, the chairman of the occasion, the chief of Abrewankor, Nene Addey Tetteh I, reiterated his sincerest appreciation to NUS Network Ghana and its partners and donors for the beautiful project that will secure the future against the extinction of indigenous crops.

COMMISSIONING AND HANDING OVER OF MULTI-PROJECTS

On Tuesday, 20th January, 2026, the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey,and the Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, joined the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, to commission and hand over multiple projects to the residents of five(5) communities in the Municipality.

These projects which will improve the health delivery services in the Municipality and welfare of health workers range from CHPS Compound to bungalow for health workers in five(5) communities. In Aketebour, Aboa Osuboninya, Akorwu Bana, and Aboabo, the Hon. Regional Minister, the Hon. MP, and the Hon. MCE jointly commissioned and handed over four(4) CHPS Compound with accommodation to the health workers and residents of these communities. Additionally, a nurse quarters at Klo-Agogo was commissioned and handed over to the nurses at Klo-Agogo.

In unison, they thanked the president of the republic for his commitment in completing legacy projects to serve the good people of Yilo. They admonished the residents and the nurses to take good care of the projects to serve many generations. Also, they pleaded with the residents to motivate the health workers.

The Municipal health Directorate and the residents of the five(5) communities expressed their overwhelming appreciation to the president of the republic, the Regional Minister, the Member of Parliament, and the Municipal Chief Executive.

MCE OF YKMA CUTS SOD FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF MULTIPLE PROJECTS

On Wednesday January 21,2026, the MCE of YKMA, Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, together with the MP for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, and some key stakeholders of the Municipality cut sod at seven(7) communities for the construction multiple projects.
Below are the projects:
▶️Two(2) classroom block with office, store, Canteen, and washroom for Korboe Okumka M/A School, Somanya.
▶️CHPS Compound at Brukum Maumi.
▶️Mechanized borehole with water treatment plant and overhead tank at Tsotsunya.
▶️Mechanized borehole with water treatment plant and overhead tank at Wurapong Osu.
▶️Mechanized borehole with water treatment plant and overhead tank at Aboabo M/A School.
▶️Mechanized borehole with water treatment plant and overhead tank at Nkurakan Clinic, Nkurakan.
▶️Mechanized borehole with water treatment plant and overhead tank at Akpamu Health Centre, Akpamu.

The contractors assured the MP, the MCE, and the residents that the duration for the completion of the boreholes is four(4) months, and six(6) months for both the CHPS Compound and the KG block.

Both the MP and the MCE entreated the residents to motivate and fully cooperate with the contractors and their workers. They continued that residents should channel their misunderstanding or grievances which will arise as a result of construction of these projects to their Dade Mantse, assmebly members or better still come to the MCE

The residents expressed their overwhelming appreciation to the government for bringing potable water to their doorsteps.

*HEAD OF SERVICE PAYS A WORKING VISIT TO YKMA*

On Friday, 16th January 2026, the Head of the Local Government Service (LGS), Professor Lord Mensah, and his management team paid a working visit to Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly to familiarize themselves with the staff.

In his welcome address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly (YKMA), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, stated that the municipality is in its fourth(4th) assembly and has sixty-three (63) Honourable Assembly Members; compromising forty-four (44) elected members, and nineteen (19) appointed members. He added that the Assembly has a total staff strength of one hundred and fifty-nine (159) personnel, comprising one hundred and thirty-nine (139) permanent staff and twenty (20) casual staff.

Hon. Akumatey highlighted among others, the following notable achievements under his administration:
▶️The introduction of electronic billing and payment system to improve revenue mobilization, accountability, and transparency.
▶️Operationalization of the Akutunya lorry park to improve traffic management and boost Internally Generated Fund(IGF).
▶️The installation of clock in attendance monitoring system to check punctuality and absenteeism.
▶️The acquisition of final disposal site at Klo-Agogo.
▶️Completion and furnishing of CHIPS Compound at Akorwu Bana, Aketebour, Aboabo, and Aboa Osuboninya.

In closing his remarks, Hon. Akumatey spoke extensively about the challenges the Assembly and its staff face and pleaded with the Head of the Local Government Service to address them. He listed the following as the key ones:
🗣️Uneven distribution of staff to departments and units as some are understaffed while others are overstaffed.
🗣️Acute shortage of staff at works, Agric, Roads, and Finance departments.
🗣️Shortage of office accommodation for heads of departments and units.
🗣️The rise in rental cost in the Municipality which affects staff accommodation has compelled some staff to commute from places outside the Municipality to come to work
🗣️Lack of staff capacity building and skill development

The Head of the Local Government Service, Prof. Lord Mensah, commended the management of the Assembly for the prudent measures it has put in place to ensure punctuality and productivity. He shared the following missions which are anchored on four(pillars):
☑️Data Driven Decision Making: Decision on human resource should be based on administrative and credible data.
☑️Professionalizing the local Government Service: Disciplined, competent, and ethical workforce should be built to meet service delivery standards.
☑️Investing in Public Private Partnership: Such investments will ensure efficiency and sustainability of the private sector for the Assembly to generate more revenue.
☑️Fiscal decentralization: The Assembly should be financially independent and autonomous to have reliable cash flows.

In concluding his remarks, he cautioned the staff against indiscipline, insubordination, lateness to work, absenteeism, disrespecting the channel of reportage, antagonism, among others that re**rd the growth of the service. He pleaded with the MCE to support his staff with logistics. He entreated heads of departments to ensure discipline and accountability at all levels among the subordinates. He continued that the staff should eschew vacating their posts. He advocated for the establishment of crèche at the Assembly to accommodate the babies of nursing mothers to ensure productivity.

The Deputy Director, Mr. John Mensin Mframah, thanked Prof. Lord Mensah and his management team for the indispensable advice they gave to the staff and management of the Assembly.

*YKMA DISTRIBUTES SUPPORT ITEMS TO 74 PWDs*

On Tuesday, 13th January, 2026, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA) through the Social Welfare and Community Development Department distributed start-up kits and capital to seventy-four(74) Persons Living With Disabilities(PWDs) in the Municipality. To promote self-reliance and economic empowerment, a total of thirty-one(31) PWDs received start-up kits
such as Chest Freezers, polytanks, Industrial sewing machines, fufu machines, bags of gari,bags of charcoal, among others. Eleven(11) beneficiaries received start-up capital. Other categories of benefits include educational support, medical support, and Provision of Assistive Devices.

The Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo Constituency, Hon. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, graced the occasion and pleaded with all the beneficiaries to use the start-up kits and capital for intended purposes to empower themselves economically.

The Municipal Chief Executive(MCE) of Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly(YKMA), Hon. Francis Addo Akumatey, commended the government for increasing the Disability Common Fund(DCF) from 3% to 5%. He advised the beneficiaries not to equate their disabilities as inability. He emphasized that the selection of beneficiaries was done without malice and therefore pleaded with other PWDs in the Municipality who were not beneficiaries today that they will also benefit in the subsequent years.

The Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development Department, Madam Na-Afua Woyram Tettey, highlighted the fair, transparent,and non-partisan approach adopted as beneficiaries were identified through applications, followed by thorough assessment by officers, and finally approved by Disability Fund Management Committee. She admonished the beneficiaries not to sell the items as supervisors will routinely visit them to inspect the items. She also encouraged the beneficiaries to use the items and the capital for their intended purposes so that these benefits will make them live independently and bridge the gap that limit their participations in the society.

The President of Ghana Federation of Disability(GFD) in the Municipality, Madam Vida Awaitey, urged all persons living with disabilities in the Municipality to join the association. On behalf of the beneficiaries, she expressed her profound gratitude to the government, the MP, and the Municipality.
