NAS Responds Swiftly to Road Traffic Accident in Western North Region

A road traffic accident involving a fully loaded Sprinter bus has left eleven passengers injured along the Sefwi Asafo–Sefwi Asawinso road in the Western North Region.

The bus, travelling from Kumasi to Osei Kwadwo-Krom, was involved in a crash that resulted in multiple casualties, with victims sustaining injuries ranging from head trauma and limb fractures to suspected spinal injuries.

Community Medical First Responders (CMFRs) were the first on the scene, swiftly rescuing the victims and transporting them to the St. John of God Hospital (SJoGH), Sefwi Asafo, where they received emergency care and stabilization.

Western North NAS Moves to Establish New Ambulance Station in Asawinso "A"
The National Ambulance Service (NAS) in the Western North Region has held a strategic meeting with traditional authorities, the Assembly Member, and key stakeholders of the Sefwi Asawinso A community as part of a service feasibility tour.
The engagement followed the announcement by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service of the government’s decision to strengthen emergency medical services nationwide through the procurement of 400 new ambulances and 500 motorbikes. The expansion aims to boost coverage and response capacity across the country, including the Western North Region.
The purpose of the meeting was to seek the community’s commitment to provide office space and residential accommodation, as Asawinso A has been selected to benefit from the ambulance stations expansion programme.
Addressing the stakeholders, the Acting Regional Manager of the National Ambulance Service for Western North, DCAEMT James Hackman, outlined the strategic importance of Asawinso A to emergency medical operations. He explained that the town’s location makes it ideal for improving response times, as it serves as a major transport hub linking several towns and cities.
According to him, Asawinso A is connected by major road networks to Ayamfuri, Obuasi, Wassa Akropong, Asankraguaa, Sefwi Wiawso, Goaso, and Nyinahin, making it a critical point for effective ambulance deployment across the region.
Mr. Hackman further noted that while small-scale mining remains a key economic activity in the area, advanced plans for the establishment of a bauxite refinery within the community position Asawinso A as a potential future industrial hub.
He emphasized that the establishment of an ambulance station in the community would significantly reduce emergency response times and improve patient outcomes. He therefore appealed to stakeholders to support the initiative by providing the necessary office and residential accommodation for ambulance personnel.
In response, the Chief of Asawinso A Nana Akwasi Ayim III, speaking through Mr. Nelson Frank Ackah the Assembly Member for the Asawinso A Electoral Area, welcomed the decision to include the community in the ambulance expansion programme. He pledged the full support of the traditional authority and the community, assuring NAS of their readiness to provide all required resources to facilitate the establishment of the ambulance station.

According to DCAEMT James Hackman, the Acting Regional Manager, the exercise forms part of the region’s 2026 Action Plan aimed at enhancing the quality of pre-hospital emergency care across the region.
DCAEMT Hackman commended staff for their dedication to saving lives despite the logistical constraints faced by the region. He noted that the unwavering commitment of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) has led to remarkable operational achievements.
Mr. Hackman revealed that the region successfully responded to 648 emergency cases in 2025, an increase from the 541 cases recorded in 2024. He described this as a “historic improvement since the establishment of the Service in the region in 2020,” driven by staff professionalism and resilience.
