The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) 9 as part of its Civil-Military Corporation (CIMIC) activities has commenced a 6-month tailoring course for some locals within the Battalion’s Area of Operation. A short ceremony was held at the forecourt of the St Martins de Porres Catholic Church in Bentiu on Tuesday 1 February 2022 to officially inaugurate the course.

In his remarks, the Commanding Officer (CO) of GHANBATT 9, Lt Col Michael Mfum disclosed that his Battalion found it obligatory as a peacekeeping force to bring positive change to the lives of the people in the Battalion’s Area of Operational Responsibility. He indicated that, this would be achieved by facilitating sustainable projects capable of generating returns for the local community. He further encouraged the participants to go through the 6 - month course with utmost seriousness in order to benefit from it and also impart their experience and skills onto others. He finally conveyed his appreciation to the Parish Priest, Rev Fr Stephen Ocis Oman for allowing the course to take place on the church premises. He also thanked all stakeholders who made the organization of the course a success.
Rev Fr Ocis Oman in turn expressed gratitude to GHANBATT for their thoughtfulness towards the locals in Bentiu. He urged the course participants to undertake the course with the mindset of coming out as resourceful persons capable of producing clothes for local use.
To facilitate the course, GHANBATT donated bundles of fabrics and an assortment of tools to each of the course participants to enable them undergo the training successfully.
