CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2026

The Department of Gender, in collaboration with the Gender Club of Riis Presbyterian School, successfully organized a school-based sensitization program to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”

The event, held on March 11, 2026, at the school premises, brought together pupils from BS6 to BS9, including both girls and boys, to learn, share, and reflect on issues affecting women and girls in our society.

The session focused on key topics such as:

- Promoting and protecting women’s rights
- Understanding the importance of justice and equality
- Sharing inspiring stories of women role models
- Encouraging practical actions through the campaign “Give to Gain”

As part of the engagement, participants were given the opportunity to mention prominent and successful women they admire. This session encouraged them to identify positive role models and inspired them to work towards achieving their own goals.

Participants actively engaged in discussions and interactive activities, which helped deepen their understanding of gender equality and the role they can play in building a more inclusive society.

The program also emphasized the importance of empowering the girl child while encouraging boys to become supportive partners in promoting respect, fairness, and equal opportunities for all.

The Department of Gender remains committed to working with schools and communities to nurture informed, confident, and responsible young people who will champion the rights and dignity of women and girls.

DEPARTMENT OF GENDER, EASTERN REGION LEADS RADIO DISCUSSIONS ON WOMEN'S RIGHT TO MARK INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2026

As part of activities marking International Women’s Day 2026, the Department of Gender organized radio discussions to raise awareness on women’s rights, justice, and collective action toward gender equality.

The discussions were held on Sunrise FM on 5th March 2026 and Eastern FM on 6th March 2026, where panelists from the Department of Gender engaged listeners on important issues affecting women and girls in our communities.

The panelists included Moses Tetteh, Gladys Baidoo, Louisa Amoako, and Priscilla Darkwah. The discussion focused on the significance of International Women’s Day, the 2026 theme emphasizing Rights, Justice and Action, and the progress Ghana has made in promoting women’s empowerment.

During the program, the panelists highlighted the importance of ensuring that women and girls are able to fully enjoy their rights, especially with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Act, 2024 (Act 1121). They also discussed cultural and social barriers that still limit opportunities for women, as well as the need to strengthen support systems for victims of violence and discrimination.

Listeners were encouraged to recognize the role everyone plays, (men, women, families, institutions, and communities)in promoting gender equality and empowering the girl child to become confident leaders in the future.

The discussions also emphasized that achieving Gender Equality requires not only advocacy but practical actions such as protecting the rights of women and girls, supporting girls’ education, and speaking up against Gender-Based Violence.

The Department of Gender remains committed to working with stakeholders and communities to promote the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of women and girls across the Region.

TRAINING GENDER DESK OFFICERS IN THE EASTERN REGION ON THE NATIONAL FRAMEWORK ON ENGAGING TRADITIONAL LEADERS, MEN AND BOYS AND CHILD MARRAIGE TOOLKITS

On 30th June 2025, the Department of Gender, in collaboration with UNFPA and the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, organized the first regional capacity-building training for Gender Desk Officers at the NASCO Hotel in Koforidua. This impactful two-day workshop aimed to equip 20 dedicated officers from the various districts within the region, with the knowledge, tools, and leadership skills needed to effectively implement the revised National Gender Policy at the district level.

The training sessions focused on key topics such as gender mainstreaming, leadership development, child protection, and engaging men, boys, traditional, and religious leaders in promoting gender equality. Officers were empowered to serve as change agents within their communities, driving gender-sensitive planning, enforcing policy implementation, and tackling challenges like gender-based violence and child marriage.

Through presentations, group case studies, and practical discussions, the workshop fostered a deeper understanding of gender issues and the importance of coordinated efforts at the grassroots level. The event concluded with strong commitments from officers to intensify stakeholder engagement and push for inclusive development across all districts in the region.

UNFPA AND GENDER DEPARTMENT. TRAIN KEY STAKEHOLDERS IN EASTERN REGION TO COMBAT GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

The Eastern Regional Department of Gender, in collaboration with the UNFPA and the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (ERCC), hosted a capacity-building workshop on June 24, 2025, in Koforidua to strengthen the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). The event brought together frontline service providers including the Ghana Health Service (GHS), DOVVSU, and civil society groups.

The workshop focused on the Essential Services Package (ESP), a global framework jointly developed by UN Women, UNFPA, WHO, UNDP, and UNODC, aimed at delivering coordinated, survivor-centered support across health, justice, and social sectors. Presenters highlighted the legal foundations of Ghana’s response, challenges such as lack of shelters and data systems, and proposed multi-sectoral improvements like mobile units and operationalizing the Domestic Violence Fund.

Participants gained practical insights into regional SGBV trends, reporting gaps, and the health sector’s role in post-violence care. A regional review revealed disturbing trends including r**e, defilement, in**st, and emotional abuse, mostly underreported due to stigma and weak support systems.

The session ended with an emotional call to action by Mr. Moses Tetteh Keney, Programme Officer at the Department of Gender, urging for unified, long-term efforts to eliminate gender-based violence. Key recommendations included establishing a dedicated abuse response center in the Eastern Region, regional hotlines, shelter facilities, and stronger public education on legal rights and services available.

WOMEN ENGAGEMENT ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, 2025

Koforidua, March 14, 2025 – National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), in collaboration with the Eastern Region Women Caucus and the Department of Gender, organized an impactful event to mark International Women’s Day at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) in Koforidua.

Under the theme “Accelerate Action: Together, Let’s Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” the event brought together women leaders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss pressing gender issues and explore ways to foster greater inclusivity and equity.

Miss Priscilla Pomaa Darkwah, a Program Officer at the Department of Gender, delivered a speech emphasizing the need to champion women’s rights at all levels of society. She addressed key challenges such as gender-based violence, economic disparities, and the underrepresentation of women in leadership, urging stakeholders to take decisive action.

“This year’s theme calls for a renewed commitment to dismantling barriers for women and girls. True empowerment goes beyond opportunities—it requires ensuring equal access to resources, decision-making, and the protection of fundamental rights,” she stated.

Representatives from the Women Caucus and NALAG shared insights on their initiatives to promote women’s economic independence, political participation, and education. They also discussed strategies for strengthening policies that protect and advance gender equality within local governance.

The event concluded with a powerful call to action, urging governments, civil society, and the private sector to intensify efforts in creating a more inclusive and equitable society for women and girls.

DEPARTMENT OF GENDER, EASTERN REGION ENGAGES IN RADIO DISCUSSIONS TO MARK INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

As part of the celebrations for International Women’s Day, the Department of Gender took to the airwaves to engage, educate, and empower the public on this year’s theme: “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”

On March 7th, 2025, the Department held a special discussion on Eastern FM, followed by another enlightening session on March 10th, 2025, at Sunrise FM. These radio engagements aimed to amplify the voices of women, highlight their rights, and promote gender equality.

The panelists—Moses Tetteh Keney, Priscilla Pomaa Darkwah, Louisa Brago Amoako, Gladys Baidoo, and Petra —shared insights on various topics, including women’s rights, gender equality, and the importance of empowering women and girls in all aspects of life. The discussions emphasized the need for collective efforts to break barriers, challenge discrimination, and create inclusive opportunities for women to thrive.

Listeners actively participated by calling in, sharing their experiences, and asking questions, making the sessions interactive and impactful. SENSITIZATION ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AT ASCENSION BASIC SCHOOL, KOFORIDUA

Ascension Basic School, January 31, 2025 – The Department of Gender has successfully conducted a school sensitization program aimed at educating students on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Domestic Violence. The event, held at Ascension Basic School, focused on raising awareness about the dangers of violence, its impact on individuals and society, and ways to prevent and report such cases.

Experts from the department engaged students in interactive discussions, real-life scenarios, and role-playing activities to help them understand the importance of respect, consent, and equality. They emphasized the need for students to speak up against any form of abuse and provided contact information for relevant support services.

Speaking at the event, Moses Tetteh Keney stated, “It is crucial to empower young minds with knowledge about gender-based violence. By fostering awareness, we are shaping a future generation that stands against all forms of abuse.”

Students and teachers expressed appreciation for the session, noting that it provided valuable insights and encouraged open discussions on an important issue. The department pledged to continue such initiatives in more schools to ensure widespread awareness and advocacy against violence.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ON THE SIXTEEN DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN
The issue of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is a global human rights abuse that hinders sustainable development and gender equality. In Ghana, the high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) is a pressing social and health concern requiring continuous attention. As part of advocacy efforts, the "Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls in Ghana" campaign marked the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women with a sensitization program held on December 9, 2024, at the Ascension Presbyterian Hall, Koforidua. Organized by the Department of Gender in collaboration with the Domestic Violence Secretariat, the program targeted women and schoolchildren.

Key speakers included dignitaries from the Domestic Violence Secretariat (DV Secretariat), DOVVSU, Ghana Health Service, Legal Aid, and the Department of Children, alongside traditional leaders. Presentations covered various aspects of GBV:

1. Mad. Monica Opoku Agyeman (DOVVSU):

Defined types of domestic violence, including physical, sexual, and economic abuse.

Discussed legal definitions of r**e, defilement, and cybercrimes.

Emphasized the need for education and stricter enforcement of laws.

2. Mad. Edith Asiedua (Ghana Health Service):

Highlighted the health impacts of GBV, including physical injuries, STIs, unwanted pregnancies, and mental health issues like PTSD and depression.

Addressed the socio-economic consequences of abuse, such as poverty and stigmatization.

3. Mad. Latifa (Department of Children):

Focused on child protection against exploitation, labor, and trafficking.

Cited alarming statistics on child labor and early marriage in Ghana.

Proposed solutions such as legal reforms, community education, and survivor support.

4. Mr. Donald Osei (Legal Aid):

Introduced the Legal Aid Commission's services, including free legal support for underprivileged individuals.

Explained the organization's role in addressing cases like child support, marital disputes, and criminal issues.

The program featured interactive sessions where participants’ questions were addressed. The event concluded with a closing prayer and remarks from the chairperson, reinforcing the importance of collective action against GBV.

ADVOCACY ON SEXUAL AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE (SGBV) AT NEW JUABENG SECONDARY SCHOOL ( 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN)

The National Youth Authority (NYA), in collaboration with the Department of Gender, Eastern Region, organized another significant event as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The program, held at New Juaben Senior High School on 3rd December 2024 at 2:00 PM, focused on the topic "Advocacy on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

The campaign aimed to:
1. Raise awareness about the prevalence and impact of SGBV.

2. Equip students with knowledge and tools to prevent and respond to violence.

3. Advocate for a collective effort to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence.

RADIO ENGAGEMENT ON 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN ON THE THEME, EMPOWERING YOUTH: ENDING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the National Youth Authority (NYA) in collaboration with the Department of Gender, Eastern Region, organized a radio sensitization program on 29th November, 2024. The discussion was held at Eastern FM with key speakers Juliana Abbeyquaye, Acting Regional Director of Gender, and Evelyn Lotsu, Regional Director of the National Youth Authority.

The session focused on creating awareness of gender-based violence and empowering communities to take action. Key points discussed included:

1. Understanding Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Juliana Abbeyquaye emphasized the importance of educating the public about the forms, causes, and consequences of GBV, particularly its impact on women and youth.

2. Role of Youth in Ending GBV: Evelyn Lotsu highlighted the pivotal role of young people in driving social change and championing gender equality within their communities.

3. Call for Collective Action: The speakers called for stronger collaboration between individuals, community leaders, and institutions to tackle GBV effectively. They encouraged reporting cases of abuse and supporting survivors with available resources.

This program also marked a significant step in fostering awareness and advocacy against gender-based violence, reinforcing the commitment of the NYA and the Department of Gender to promoting a violence-free society in the upcoming election.
