BPA’S 8TH ANNUAL STAKEHOLDERS’ MEETING HIGHLIGHTS STRONG PERFORMANCE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY GROWTH

Bui Power Authority (BPA) held its 8th Annual Stakeholders’ Meeting on Friday, August 7, 2026, at BPA Heights in Accra to review the Authority’s 2025 financial and operational performance. The meeting brought together representatives from Government, regulators, the BPA Board, Management, the State Interests and Governance Authority, energy sector partners, Traditional Authorities, and other stakeholders.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Board Chairman, Amb. Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Board Member Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Kwaku Doku said BPA’s 2025 performance demonstrated the Authority’s capacity to deliver on its mandate while laying the foundation for its next phase of growth, particularly in renewable energy.

In 2025, BPA recorded a net profit of US$66.2 million on revenue of US$145.9 million and generated 1,438 GWh of electricity, exceeding its annual target of 1,350 GWh by 6.5 percent. The Bui Hydroelectric Plant maintained an average availability rate of 95 percent, while the Authority continued to diversify its generation portfolio by increasing its installed solar PV capacity from 55 MWp to 105 MWp during the year.

In his statement, the CEO of BPA, Ing. Kow Eduakwa Sam, announced plans to significantly scale up the Authority’s renewable energy capacity. Approximately 100 MWp of additional solar PV is expected to increase operational solar capacity to about 205 MWp. The Authority also plans to develop 300 MWp of dispatchable solar PV integrated with large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems by the end of 2028. He, however, identified outstanding receivables from BPA’s major off-taker as a key constraint to financing the planned expansion.

Commenting on the Authority’s performance and expansion plans, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, commended BPA’s achievements and urged Management to maintain financial prudence, transparency, accountability, and sound governance as the Authority advances its expanded mandate under Act 1046 and contributes to Ghana’s renewable energy agenda.

WAPP EXECUTIVE SECRETARY PAYS COURTESY CALL ON BPA CEO

The Executive Secretary of the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP), Ing. Abdoulaye Dia, paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Power Authority (BPA), Ing. Kow Eduakwa Sam, during his visit to Accra for the 60th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA).

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration among member countries to advance regional power integration and improve electricity supply across West Africa.

Welcoming the WAPP Executive Secretary, Ing. Sam thanked him for WAPP's continued support and reaffirmed BPA's commitment to working with the organization to promote regional energy integration and sustainable power development.
During the discussions, the BPA CEO highlighted key renewable energy projects being undertaken by the Authority that could benefit from enhanced regional cooperation. He cited the soon-to-be-commissioned 50MWp Yendi Solar Project, noting that the proximity of transmission substations to the project site would enable efficient power evacuation and maximize its contribution to the national grid.

Ing. Sam also highlighted progress on BPA's 250MWp Hydro-Solar Hybrid Programme, noting that the first 100MWp has been completed and connected to the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), underscoring the importance of regional partnerships in advancing clean energy development.

The Executive Secretary of WAPP, Ing. Dia, commended BPA's growing contribution to renewable energy development and reiterated WAPP's commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance regional electricity trade and strengthen energy security across the West African sub-region.
