A nation's wealth, according to literature, is determined also by how much food reserves she has. Grains are of great concern here as they have long shelf-life. Grains include: maize, rice, various beans, soy bean and the like. Countries like Argentina have a lot of land hence produce a lot for storage. Some do not have much land but buy grains to build reserves. Let us emulate this to have another source of wealth.

That was cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) on the office premises in the Minor Season of 2015. This, apart from rejuvenating the soil for other purposes (nitrogen fixation) also serves as a demonstration field for farmers and other clients that visit the office or pass by to learn from.
On the other way round however, this means the presence of chemicals, especially insecticides in the premises. This is because cowpea can scarcely be cultivated without the concomitant use of insecticides: against pre- and post-flowering insect pests that visit the lush-growth field. Remember that much of the chemicals come directly when the spraying is done in windy times. This constitutes driftage. There is also vapour drift (volatilisation of the chemicals) coming from the plant and soil surfaces afterwards especially under our hot tropical conditions. This reduces the integrity of the air on the premises! Do you call this an occupational hazad?
Those of us in the agricultural sector are exposed to a lot of occupational hazards especially when we visit the field. These include obnoxious chemicals sprayed by farmers. It also includes zoonotic diseases like avian influenza and anthrax. Other dangers are prowling beasts such as snakes. Others are injuries from equipment, thorns and dangerous plants like the Mucuna pruriens with spines coming from their dry pods. Comments?
