WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS – BLUE DAY 2026

Wear Blue. Stand Against Human Trafficking. Protect Every Child.

Today, 30 July 2026, the Department of Social Welfare joined the global community in observing the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, also known as Blue Day, by wearing blue as a symbol of solidarity with survivors of human trafficking and a renewed commitment to ending all forms of exploitation.

Human trafficking is a grave violation of human rights that robs individuals, especially children of their safety, dignity, freedom, and future. On this Blue Day, we reaffirmed our dedication to preventing trafficking, protecting survivors, prosecuting offenders through collaboration with law enforcement agencies, and promoting awareness to safeguard vulnerable persons.

The Department of Social Welfare continues to play a central role in Ghana's anti-trafficking efforts through prevention, rescue response, case management, psychosocial support, family tracing and reunification, rehabilitation, and coordination with stakeholders to ensure the best interests of every child are protected.

Most recently, the Department collaborated closely with the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and other partners following the rescue of about 40 trafficked children. Our officers provided immediate care and protection services, including psychosocial support, needs assessments, temporary care arrangements, family tracing, and comprehensive case management to facilitate the safe recovery and reintegration of the rescued children into protective family and community environments.

As we commemorate Blue Day, we call on parents, caregivers, community members, traditional leaders, faith-based organizations, civil society, and all citizens to remain vigilant, report suspected cases of human trafficking, and work collectively to protect children and other vulnerable persons from exploitation.

Department of Social Welfare, NGO Trains Parents on Good Parenting.

The Volta Regional Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with AiBi Friends Foundation, a non-governmental organization has provided a training for some selected parents on good parenting.

The participants included foster parents and parents whose children had been reunited with them after years of separation.

The parents drawn from different parts of the region were equipped with effective parenting skills, focusing on positive discipline techniques, open communication, setting clear boundaries and fostering a healthy parent-child relationship.

The Volta Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Madam Stella Mawusi Agbezuhlor Mawutor, said the programme aimed to improve the beneficiaries’ ability to raise children in a supportive and nurturing environment.

The Director stated that the training was designed to keep parents up to date on contemporary developments in child-rearing, including the applicable laws.

She said owing to the separation, the children needed to learn how to adjust to their new environment, thus it was critical to provide the necessary knowledge to the parents so that they could appropriately handle them.

Madam Mawutor stated that the country’s policy – the Care Reform Policy – is to ensure that every child grows up in a family, emphasizing that the home is the ideal setting for children to receive love and care.

The Director asked the parents to prioritize quality time with the children and should endeavor to address their physical and psychological needs as they were vital for children’s wellbeing and development.

Mr. Gideon Korda, Director of AiBi Friends of Children Foundation, said the Foundation would continue to collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare to reunite vulnerable children with their parents.

He said it was a blessing to support vulnerable children in society, encouraging the parents to provide the best of care to their children.

The parents thanked the Department of Social Welfare and the Foundation and pledged to put to good use the knowledge and skills they acquired
