WHO Familiarization Tour – North East Region, Day 3 Summary

Date: 20/05/2026

On the final day of the tour, the WHO delegation visited the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, Bowku CHPS, and Langbinsi Health Centre in the East Mamprusi Municipality. Presentations from all three facilities showed progress in health indicators and community engagement.

Common achievements included stronger staff commitment and local innovations to sustain care. Challenges raised across the facilities centered on logistics and transport constraints, delays in NHIS accreditation, gaps in essential equipment such as neonatal resuscitation devices and nebulizers, limited space, weak referral systems, inadequate infection prevention measures, and poor waste management. Traditional authorities at Langbinsi also appealed for an upgrade to hospital status.

At the exit meeting, Dr. Braka commended the region’s resilience, staff dedication, and political support, noting that the tour’s objectives had been met. She highlighted the need to address workforce motivation, NHIS accreditation, and broader systemic issues such as infrastructure, water, roads, and power, and pledged WHO’s advocacy at the national level and support for cross-border collaboration and staff capacity building.

The Regional Director of Health Services for the North East Region thanked the team for their insights and encouragement, stating that the visit had opened new opportunities for the region. He promised that his office would take the necessary steps to address some of the essential logistics and equipment challenges outlined by the facility staff.

He affirmed that the observations would inform advocacy and planning and urged sustained partnership to advance quality healthcare closer to the people.

WHO Country Representative Familiarization Tour, North East Region
Day 2: Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri District

On Day 2 of the 3-day tour, the WHO team led by Country Representative Dr. Fiona Braka, together with the Regional Health Directorate, visited Binde Hospital in Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri District. The team engaged with hospital and district staff to assess rural health service delivery.

Presentations highlighted progress in establishing a NICU, expanding maternal and child health services, providing 24-hour OPD care, and rehabilitating key units. Regional Director Dr. Godfred Kwabena Sarpong appealed for WHO’s advocacy and support to address ongoing challenges, including staff shortages, infrastructure gaps, inadequate accommodation, unstable power supply, and weak network connectivity.

The district also noted difficulties with poor roads, limited transport to hard-to-reach communities, and the suspension of ambulance services after 6:00pm due to security concerns. Low NHIS enrolment and renewal rates, along with information gaps in cross-border health collaboration with Togo, were further raised.

Dr. Braka commended staff for their efforts and noted that the visit provided firsthand insight into the realities of rural health service delivery. She emphasized that focus should not only be placed on improving NHIS enrolment for the realization of free primary healthcare, but that the quality of services should also be a priority for health system managers in the region.

The team also interacted with staff on the hospital wards. The tour continues tomorrow with visits to selected facilities in the East Mamprusi Municipality.
