Posuban Shrines – Timeless Symbols of Asafo Heritage in the Central Region

Posuban shrines are iconic architectural symbols found across the Central Region of Ghana, particularly in coastal Fante communities such as Elmina, Cape Coast, Anomabo, Kormantse and Mankessim. Built by traditional military groups known as Asafo companies, these shrines serve as spiritual, historical and cultural monuments.

Beyond their striking colour, sculpture and symbolism, each posuban stands as a record of community identity, bravery and protection. They house sacred objects, commemorate historic events, and continue to function as sites for ritual, festivals and community gatherings.

Today, posuban shrines remain an important part of Ghana’s cultural landscape—preserving stories of resilience, leadership and unity. A visit to one is not just a visual experience, but a step into the living memory of the Fante people and their rich ancestral tradition.
