Sophia Lee, cultural practitioner and academic created history as she brought the Barbados Landship ashore in Ghana. She made the High Commission so proud! Cultural diplomacy is best showcased through bringing Barbadian creatives here. Thanks Pan African Commission for supporting her initiative and Carol Roberts, NCF for certifying trainers of land ship like Sophia.
I have known Sophia from the time she cofounded Haynesville Community Youth Group with Peter Skeete. We were so glad to welcome and embrace her work in Ghana. She came for a short course of study but the student later became the teacher as the University of Ghana School of Performing Arts allowed her to teach a 2nd Year class. David and myself were super engaged observers. Even I did not realize how rich in meaning the elements of Landship were. The responsiveness of the students to understanding their diaspora encouraged the University of Ghana to consider having landship incorporated into the world dance curriculum. This is Sophia’s vision to elevate our art form on the global stage and better understand the African ancestry of our dances and cultural expression cultural diplomacy in action.
