Yesterday's discussions focused on "The Citizen as Sovereign in a Democracy: Rights, Obligations and Responsibilities," examining the opportunities and challenges of citizenship in the digital age, the impact of misinformation on democratic participation, and the imperative of placing citizens at the centre of Ghana's democratic development.

Today, the conversation concludes with the sub-theme:

"Complicity of Citizen (In)Action in Democratic Reversals: Lessons for Ghana."

Join us as we reflect on the role of citizens in safeguarding democratic gains, promoting accountability, and strengthening democratic governance in Ghana.

We successfully opened the 2026 Public Forum on the theme:
"Citizens and Democratic Consolidation in Ghana: Rights, Obligations and Duties."
Day 1 focused on "The Imperatives of Citizenship in Sustaining and Consolidating Ghana's Democracy", with insightful presentations on the relationship between citizens, the state, democratic legitimacy, and civic responsibility.

We were honoured to host the 2026 Ephraim Amu Memorial Lecture on the theme, "Advancing Human Rights Through Music."

Delivering the lecture, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, FGA, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, highlighted the transformative power of music as a catalyst for justice, a defender of human dignity and a platform for amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

He underscored music's enduring role in advocacy, social change and the promotion of fundamental human rights.

Chaired by Emerita Professor Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi, FGA, President of the Academy, the event brought together Fellows, academics, students, policymakers, lawmakers and members of the public for a thought provoking discussion on the intersection of music, culture and human rights.

As we reflect on the enduring legacy of Ephraim Amu, the lecture reaffirmed that music is far more than a form of artistic expression. It is a powerful force for education, advocacy, social transformation and nation building.

Yesterday, we hosted the 2026 Annual Lecture in the Humanities delivered by Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, FGA, Professor of Population and Medical Geography at the University of Ghana.

The lecture examined in*******al and interethnic marriages in Accra and explored their implications for identity, migration, urbanisation and social change in contemporary Ghanaian society.

The session was chaired by Emerita Professor Takyiwaa Manuh, FGA, Vice President, Arts Section, GAAS.

Join us for the 2026 Annual Lecture in Arts as Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah (FGA) explores the dynamics of In*******al and Interethnic Marriages in Accra.

A respected scholar of population, health and environmental geography, Prof. Agyei-Mensah has contributed extensively to research on demographic transitions, ethnic and residential segregation, environmental health and climate change in Africa.

Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor, FGA, has delivered the 2026 Inaugural Lecture in the Sciences of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) on the topic “The Three Phases of Connectivity: Ghana’s Scientific and Political Journey to the Internet.”

The lecture traced Ghana’s digital transformation from the early development of computer science education to the country’s emergence as one of the pioneers of Internet connectivity in Africa.

Dr. Quaynor highlighted the scientific, institutional and policy decisions that shaped Ghana’s Internet journey between 1972 and 1996, while reflecting on the role of innovation, leadership and collaboration in national development.

He also emphasized the need for continued investment in computational sciences, Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies to position Ghana and Africa for the future.
