The Ag. Director-General of NDPC shared bold actions that Ghana has taken to protect the ocean. When making a Statement on 14 at the 2025 UN HLPF, Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, on Thursday July 17, 2025 highlighted Ghana’s dedication to ensuring a sustainable blue economy, by being one of the first countries to report plastic debris density under SDG 14.1.1(b).

With Ghana generating over 1.1 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, a new Circular Economy Framework for Plastics was launched in 2024 to promote waste prevention, reuse, responsible design, and guide investment.

She pointed out that efforts to address overfishing are being made through a Marine Fisheries Management Plan. Earlier this year, Ghana also ratified the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies as part of our commitment to sustainable marine resource management. A Sustainable Ocean Plan is also being developed to guide the sustainable management of Ghana’s marine resources.

Ghana will host a side event on the margins of the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development on Monday, July 22, 2025 at the UN Headquarters, New York.

The event, themed "Boosting National and Local Actions to Achieve the SDGs," will showcase Ghana's progress, challenges, and practical strategies for delivering the SDGs at the local and national levels.

On Day 3 of the UN High-Level Political Forum, Ghana's Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, delivered a Statement on 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

He noted that the Government of Ghana is implementing key initiatives like the 24-Hour Economy, the US$10bn Big Push infrastructure programme, the 1 Million Coders Initiative, and the Gold Board. These efforts aim to expand job opportunities, especially for women and youth in the informal sector.

‘To better track progress and measure impact, Ghana is strengthening data systems, producing quarterly labour statistics and working towards the conduct of a national skills mismatch survey. Dr. Iddrisu stressed that, ‘If we are serious about SDG 8, data must be treated as core infrastructure, essential to recovery, not incidental to it’

Ghana’s Statement on Sustainable Development Goal 5

At the United Nations High‑Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held in New York on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, the Acting Director‑General of NDPC , Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 5, recognising that gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are essential pillars of national development.

She highlighted the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act in July 2024 as a transformative milestone in Ghana’s legal and policy framework.

The Act mandates a minimum of 30 percent representation of women in key decision‑making bodies, promotes gender-responsive budgeting across government institutions, and guarantees protection against discrimination.

Dr. Smock Amoah also noted that Ghana has made significant progress in addressing gender-related challenges, with marked reductions in reported cases of intimate partner violence, r**e, defilement, and child marriage.

NDPC Ag. Director General Highlights Progress and Challenges in Achieving SDG 3

At the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (UN-HLPF) Interactive Panel on SDG 3, Dr. Audrey Smock-Amoah, the AG. Director General of the NDPC , reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to reducing maternal mortality, increasing healthcare funding and improving health outcomes.

Despite progress, she noted that challenges persist, particularly in underserved regions. Dr. Smock-Amoah highlighted key initiatives, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, National Health Care Quality Strategy, and Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which aim to strengthen health systems, promote patient-centered care, and reduce out-of-pocket health spending.

She also highlighted how critical investments in related areas such as sanitation, education, and the environment, are necessary to achieve positive health outcomes and advance progress on the SDGs

On Monday, July 14, 2025, Ghana’s delegation at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) paid a courtesy call on H. E. Ambassador Harold Agyeman, Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, at the Permanent Mission in New York.

President Mahama Launches Ghana’s 2025 Voluntary National Review Report on the SDGs

On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama officially launched Ghana’s third Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report on the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the country’s progress on all 17 . Highlighting key initiatives, achievements, challenges, and opportunities for accelerated action.

In his remarks, President Mahama commended NDPC for its thorough work in coordinating and compiling the report. He emphasised the need to further disaggregate the findings to make the data more accessible and actionable for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), to ensure that local development priorities are aligned with national goals.

The President noted Ghana’s steady economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing out that GDP grew from 0.5 percent in 2020 to 5.7 percent in 2024, driven mainly by growth in the industry and services sectors.
