Peace Corps Ghana

Peace Corps Ghana Welcome to the official page of Peace Corps Ghana. Welcome to Peace Corps Ghana!

In August of 1961, Ghana became the first country in the world to receive Peace Corps Volunteers. We are honored to continue our longstanding partnership with the people of Ghana and work together to support sustainable development in Agriculture, Education, and Health. Peace Corps Volunteers work side-by-side with health workers, mothers, farmers, teachers, youth, and community members of all wal

ks of life to increase food security for families, improve healthy outcomes for mothers and children, and advance educational opportunities for youth. They do this while building mutual cultural understanding between Ghanaians and Americans and fostering friendships that transcend borders and last a lifetime. While English is the official language in Ghana, learning a local language is an important part of Peace Corps’ intensive training and helps Volunteers integrate into the community in which they’ll be living and working. Serving in Ghana is a transformative and rewarding experience, both personally and professionally. We encourage you to read more about the impact and stories of Peace Corps Ghana to see if this amazing program is right for you! General Information

In the Northern Region, Volunteers Rian and Carson brought two communities together for a hands-on menstrual health and hygiene workshop attended by 96 women.

With support from nurse Rahama, Assembly Member and Peace Corps Counterpart Yahya, and fellow Volunteer Asha, participants learned how to sew reusable sanitary pads and how to properly wash and sanitize them for safe, long-term use. The gathering created space for open conversation, practical skill-building, and shared learning across communities — another example of collaboration strengthening local knowledge and expanding access to sustainable menstrual health solutions.

Host mom Madam Jemila recently took Volunteers Asha, Rian, LaBrittany, and Jacob through the process of creating batik fabric — a traditional method of dyeing cloth using melted wax to create intricate patterns. Across Ghana, artisans often incorporate Adinkra symbols that reflect their own stories of wisdom, strength, and heritage.

During this cultural exchange workshop, Madam Jemila and the Volunteers started with plain white fabric and applied designs and colors commonly seen in Ghana’s brightly patterned traditional clothing.

Take a tour of Volunteer Robert’s home in the Oti Region. Known in his community as Kobby Mensah, he serves as a math and science teacher at a local junior high school. Step inside to see his cooking area, bedroom, and even his compound chickens.

Volunteers live in community-provided housing, and this is one example of the simple accommodations they call home during their two years of service.

In the Bono East Region, Volunteer Kofi partnered with the community water committee to renovate and beautify the water-stand poly tank. Through strong community collaboration—making cement blocks, completing masonry and plastering work, and repairing electrical wiring.
The team strengthened the pillars and brought the space to life with vibrant murals.

Together, they transformed the water stand into a safer and more welcoming resource for the community.

From Florida—by way of Jamaica—to Ghana 🇬🇭 Samoya served two impactful years as a Health Volunteer in Ghana’s Volta Region, leading three grant-funded community development projects: renovating a local health clinic with a child welfare pavilion, extending pipe-borne water to two rural schools to improve WASH conditions, and completing a community-based maternity ward to expand access to safe maternal and child healthcare.
Her service focused on promoting health through nutrition and hygiene initiatives, alongside daily support at the clinic, schools, and community health education activities. She embraced Ghanaian culture by building strong community relationships through shared meals, everyday interactions, and fully engaging in community life.

Connections made abroad during service also impacts those in the US. As continues, we spotlight Volunteer Zachary and his recent visit to high school students in Georgia.

Students learned more about the Peace Corps and how Volunteers use STEM during service. The discussion covered how it facilitates education on Climate Resilient Agriculture and education on bacteria, viruses, and diseases and their transmission.
