📱🇬🇭 CLARIFYING THE MISCONCEPTION ABOUT TRAVELLING TO GHANA WITH MORE THAN TWO MOBILE PHONES

There has been considerable public discussion and misunderstanding regarding the recent Customs issue involving travellers entering Ghana with more than two mobile phones.

A common misconception is that:

“Any traveller who enters Ghana with more than two phones will automatically be required to pay Customs duty.”

This understanding is inaccurate.

The clarification provided by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) indicates that carrying more than two mobile phones does not automatically result in the payment of Customs duty. The number of phones alone is not necessarily the determining factor.
Customs authorities may assess the circumstances surrounding the items, including whether the phones are genuinely for personal use or whether they appear to be intended for commercial purposes, such as sale or distribution.

Factors that may be considered include:
• Whether the phones are used or brand new and commercially packaged.
• The quantity and nature of the devices being carried.
• Whether the phones are intended for personal use, work, or other legitimate purposes.
• Whether the items appear to be intended for sale or commercial distribution.

For instance, a traveller carrying more than two phones for legitimate personal or work-related reasons may not automatically be required to pay Customs duty simply because of the number of devices.

However, where several brand-new phones are being imported for commercial purposes, Customs may require the items to be declared and may apply the appropriate duties and taxes.

The key message, therefore, is simple:

👉 Carrying more than two mobile phones into Ghana does not automatically mean that you will pay Customs duty. Each situation may be assessed based on the nature and purpose of the items.

The public is encouraged to seek accurate information and avoid spreading misleading interpretations of Customs regulations.

Let us promote public education by sharing facts, not misconceptions.
