Guernsey & Alderney Airport Fire and Rescue Service

Guernsey & Alderney Airport Fire and Rescue Service The Fire and Rescue team at Guernsey Airport can respond at a moment’s notice to ensure the safety of all our passengers, aircraft and employees.

Guernsey & Alderney Airport Fire and Rescue Service (RFFS) provide fire cover, at both airports, to comply with the regulatory recomendations, in order to fulfil the requirements for a UK Licensed Aerodrome to operate commercial and private aircraft They are equipped and trained to deal with a wide range of emergencies comprising primarily of aircraft, medical, general fire and hazardous substance

. The will also assist other departments, such as Airport Operations, to ensure ongoing compliance with Civil Aviation Authority rules, including: runway inspections, assessing runway surface and visibility, bird control, perimeter security and foreign object management. The Airport Fire Service employs 33 staff and operates from 6am to 9.30pm, 365 days a year, with 5 Firefighters, 2 Crew Managers and a Watch Manager on duty at any one time. The airport’s fire station is strategically located to enable full emergency response to any airside location within a minute of an alarm. To assist the firefighters, they have a fleet of two Sides Fire Tenders, with a total capacity of 9,300 litres and foam solution 1,200 litres. The monitor delivers this at a rate of 4,500 litres per minute at 13 bar of pressure, along with 50kg of Monnex dry powder at 2.0kg per second. They also have two Angloco MFT's which can deliver the same discharge rates. This gives Guernsey Airport a 'Fire Category 6' status. The Airport Fire Service utilise a Boeing 737 mock training Rig, which allows them to train and become familiar with some of the dangers and hazards that this size of aircraft brings. The rig allows the trainers to simulate and organise exercises such as engine fuel fires (which are fed with diesel fuel to replicate that of aviation fuel); allowing the crews to train as realistically as possible. The interior of the rig replicates that of a passenger aircraft and this can be smoke filled and heated with industrial heaters, which often reaches temperatures of 80°C to 90°C. This type of intense training prepares and conditions the Firefighters when carrying out search and rescue operations.

Sooo…. Into week two of the Supervisor course, being facilitated by SimTrainer UK at Guernsey RFFS… the team were putting theory into practice today, ready for their assessments tomorrow.

We also welcomed the Training Coordinator from Jersey Airport RFFS to observe and share learning between the Services.

Simon Bolton is becoming a familiar trainer to us, and his knowledge and experience, in command and control, at previous multi agency incidents, is top notch in helping the team understand the process!

Thanks to Red Watch, who were on duty and helped by providing personnel for the practical sessions 🫡🚒

This week the AFM has been attending the UK Aviation Emergency Planning Group summer meeting at Cotswold Airport.

The conference room was slightly more unusual to the normal ones.

The delegates were also shown a demonstration of lifting equipment, on an A319 aircraft, by AMS Aircraft Recovery.🚒

Our team at Guernsey & Alderney Airport Fire and Rescue Service are always trying to find new opportunities to train our Fire Fighters at different locales, and create differing scenarios, that are both structured and risk assessed.

Last night Blue Watch were given permission, from Oatlands Village to utilize their facilities to carry out various search and rescue training exercises, utilizing Breathing Apparatus procedures.

The unfamiliar layout of the exercise areas, ensured crews performed the search procedures as required.

We are incredibly grateful to, in particular, Hilton and Maris, for engaging and supporting our team, with this valuable training opportunity 🚒

This week, Guernsey Airports Fire Manager attended the annual Airports Fire Officers Association Annual conference.

This is attended by over 150 Senior Officers from UK airport RFFS.

Topics delivered by expert speakers this year included:

The challenges with Hydrogen fuels, powering aircraft and airside vehicles ( including emergency response to the Hydrogen bus fire in Crawley), case studies of Air India and Southend Airport incidents, industry updates from the Civil Aviation Authority, new VR technology to support learning in the RFFS, emerging dangers of new contaminants facing fire fighters, Fire Fighters Charity, workshops, panel discussions and more…

The last day was rounded of with a behind the scenes tour of Gatwick Airport Fire and Rescue Service, who, coincidentally, were carrying out their weekly training with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Thanks to CFO Simon Petts and his team for facilitating an amazing insight to the training and preparedness of Gatwick RFFS.

Although they were not 'officially' representing GAFRS, two of our team achieved some notable results in the Rocquaine Duathlon 2026, held on Sunday morning.

Whilst weather conditions were not ideal, due to fog, Fire Fighters Ethan Woodhead and Jack Domaille managed to 'take it in their stride', with Ethan winning the event and Jack finishing in a respectable 4th, whilst recording a personnel best time.

(Jack then went on to compete in the mini football tournament later that day!)

Congratulations gents! 🏃‍♂️‍➡️🚴‍♂️🏆🚒
