We’ve drawn up with West Sussex County Council a list of ageing bus shelters across Worthing that we’d like to replace to make waiting for the bus safer and more comfortable for passengers.

The plan would allow eight seafront bus shelters between Bath Place and The Steyne to be replaced, along with one in Romany Road, one in Columbia Drive and one in Grand Avenue.

The project team are also recommending the installation of additional shelters in Shaftesbury Avenue, Goring Road, on the A259 near the junction with The Strand, and outside the lido in Marine Parade.

The shelters would match the colour of existing ones across the borough, with black being installed in conservation areas and blue in other parts of Worthing. Sticking to two colours makes it easier and more affordable for shelters to be repainted, as we’ll be able to store or quickly order supplies when needed.

We plan to use up to £240,000 from the county council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, funded by the Department for Transport, and contributions from developers.

We hope that new shelters can be installed this autumn and winter.

A new project is set to increase community participation in Fishersgate thanks to our Thriving Together grant fund.

The charity Community People has been awarded £12,500 from the fund to develop its On Your Doorstep project, which aims to replace traditional engagement methods like formal consultations with real conversations on doorsteps and in local spaces.

Last year Community People worked with us to understand what improvements local residents would like to see at Eastbrook Manor Community Centre in Fishersgate, via flyers, door-knocking and a drop-in event.

The popular community centre is currently undergoing a £1.2 million transformation project and will be run by Community People once building work is completed.

On Your Doorstep will build on this work with an engagement project that priorities in-person conversations through door-knocking, letter drops, street chats, and small gatherings at the community centre.

In the first year, the charity’s team aims to knock on 2,000 local doors and hold four face-to-face listening events to get information that can help improve local services, health results and community unity.

Free training will also be available for local voluntary and community groups on door-knocking campaigns, 10 local residents will be recruited as volunteers and up to 15 new or expanded activities led by local people and grassroots groups will be launched.

The project will culminate in a celebration event for the community and an online toolkit on how to run door-knocking campaigns so that more organisations and residents can benefit.

What information would help you to recycle more?

West Sussex recycles has launched a survey to help cut the confusion of recycling and gather information on what you would like to know.

Find out more and take part today👇

A big thank you to the 99% of last years survey respondents who believe recycling is important - we couldn't agree more!

However, even though many of us value recycling, we often overlook chances to do so at home.

Worthing Festival makes a welcome return to Homefield Park this month for a free weekend of live music, art, performance and creativity.

From 19th to 21st June, the festival line-up promises local favourites alongside national and emerging talent, with immersive art installations, workshops, family activities, roaming performances, as well as local food and drink vendors.

This year’s festival is set to be even more inclusive and accessible, thanks to £12,500 from our Thriving Together grant fund that will be used to create a community wayfinding trail and improved sound garden installation and art trail.

Building on the success of last year’s sound garden, local artists will be commissioned to create works that encourage playful interaction with sound and nature.

Some structures in the garden will also be made by Brighton charity Making it Out, which works with people who are at risk of committing crime to help them begin to change their situation through regular engagement in creative activities.

A special preview evening will be held before the festival on Friday 19th June for underrepresented audiences, including young people with sensory sensitivities, allowing them to experience the installation in a calmer environment.

The West Sussex Youth Orchestra will play a variety of classical pieces to accompany this special preview event.

To help build excitement ahead of the festival and enhance community involvement, the festival organisers have been working with local groups and creatives to host a series of free banner making workshops in Worthing.

A physical wayfinding event will also take place to open the Festival on Saturday 20th June, led by local drumming group Drumheads. This celebratory community parade will take local residents and festival participants from the seafront to Homefield Park via the town centre and Beach House Park.

For more information on the festival, including the full line-up, please visit https://worthingfestival.org.uk/.

Did you know that a team of volunteers provide free tennis lessons in Shoreham and Worthing?

This Volunteers Week we’d like to thank the volunteers who have signed up to provide free tennis sessions at Buckingham Park in Shoreham, Church House Grounds in Tarring, and Homefield Park in Worthing - helping more people in our community get active and enjoy tennis.

These volunteers do a fantastic job of engaging with anyone in our community who would like to pick up a racquet and try the sport for the first time.

You can sign up for free sessions at Homefield Park or Church House Grounds here: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/WestWorthingatHomefieldPark

For sessions at Buckingham Park please visit https://buckinghamparktennis.co.uk/coaching-schedule/

If you already enjoy playing tennis and would like to pass on your enthusiasm to others, you can volunteer to deliver free tennis sessions as an activator. Find out more here: https://www.wwc.org.uk/free-parks-tennis/.

Young people in Adur are organising a series of events to help bring the community together.

Thanks to £10,000 from our Thriving Together Fund, Shoreham-based youth charity Esteem has developed a one-year project for young people in Adur aged 14 to 26 to learn leadership, teamwork and planning skills, and gain confidence, while also improving links with the local community.

Through weekly sessions that are led by the young people themselves, they will plan and run at least four free or low-cost community activities that aim to help reduce isolation by bringing different ages and groups together.

The first event called You Belong Here is already in the works and will take place on Friday 12th June from 3.30 to 5.30pm as part of the Adur Festival.
Members of the community and local charities are invited to come together to make a mural around the words ‘you belong here’. The event will also bring together food and music from around the world for a friendly afternoon of inclusive creativity.

Find out more about the free event here:

As part of the project the group will also create a simple guide that can be used by local community organisations to help them better include and involve young people.

To hear more about Esteem and the range of free group activities, creative projects, social outings and wellbeing sessions for young people on offer for young people in Adur head to their page or visit https://esteem.org.uk/.

We are blessed with a host of parks and green spaces across Adur and Worthing and are lucky to have many active volunteer groups who keep them looking their best all year round - come rain or shine!

This Volunteers’ Week (Monday 1st to Sunday 7th June) we’d like to say a big thank you to all of the ‘friends of’ groups and other volunteers who support our parks team to make our green spaces lovely places to visit.

We currently have volunteering opportunities at Beach House Park in Worthing, where you can help us with gardening and maintenance tasks such as weeding, planting, pruning, watering, edging, raking and painting.

It's a great way to meet like-minded people and connect to nature.

Please visit https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/volunteer-in-your-local-park/ to register your interest or find out more about joining an existing group at your closest park or green space.

The next Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee (JOSC) takes place this Thursday with two main topics up for discussion:

🔹A review of the pay-on-arrival system that was introduced to all multi-storey car parks in Worthing last year

🔹An examination into the approach for letting council-owned land or buildings to community tenants.

JOSC is an elected watchdog, comprising councillors from across Adur and Worthing, and is responsible for holding decision-makers - both within and outside the councils - to account.

The meeting takes place from 6.30pm on Thursday 4th June at The Shoreham Centre, with residents welcome to attend.

More information on both topics to be scrutinised can be found here: https://democracy.adur-worthing.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?MId=2292&x=1
