🐣 Nine Great Tit chicks almost ready to fledge from one of the many bird boxes around our reserve and farm! πŸŒΏπŸ’›

Our students and volunteers monitor and record activity in the nest boxes each week, helping us learn more about the birds breeding here on the reserve πŸ¦πŸ“‹

It looks like these chicks have been enjoying a bit of luxury too β€” the nest looks to have been lined with fur from La Paz our alpaca! πŸ¦™βœ¨

Did you know that Great T**s can feed their chicks hundreds of times a day and will often remove caterpillars’ hairy outer skins before feeding them to their young? πŸƒπŸ›

🐦✨ We were treated to a fantastic sight this morning! ✨🐦

We can hear the unmistakable call of the Cuckoo throughout the day and often spot them flying across the reserve β€” but today we were lucky enough to watch one perched on the telegraph wires outside Bonnie's Tea Room and Visitor's Centre at Wildgoose for several minutes while it called πŸ‘€πŸŒΏ

Cuckoos particularly favour habitats like reedbeds, wet grassland and scrub like we have here, and there are plenty of insects and suitable host species for them to lay their eggs with πŸͺΆ

Sadly, this iconic summer visitor has declined dramatically in the UK over recent decades, so sightings like this always feel really special πŸ’š

We stumbled across this Robin’s nest tucked away in some old plant pots a few weeks ago β€” and we’re happy to say the chicks have now successfully fledged! πŸ¦πŸ’š
That’s the second brood on the farm this year, and it’s great to see them doing so well πŸ‘
Out on the reserve, we’ve got around 40 nest boxes currently in use, all helping to support breeding birds across the site 🏑🌿
Moments like this are a brilliant reminder of how important these little spaces are for wildlife 🌱

πŸ¦‹βœ¨ A fantastic find on the reserve! βœ¨πŸ¦‹

Here’s a great spot by one of our visitors to Bonnie's Tea Room and Visitor's Centre at Wildgoose β€” an Emperor moth! Worcestershire Biological Records Centre

This is one of the UK’s most striking moths, easily recognised by the large eye-like spots on all four wings, which help to deter predators πŸ‘€

Did you know? The Emperor moth is the UK’s only native silk moth, and its caterpillars spin a silk cocoon to overwinter before emerging in spring 🌿

A brilliant wildlife moment and a lovely reminder to always keep your eyes open when visiting the reserve πŸ’š

We were delighted to hear our first Cuckoo of the year on the reserve over the weekend and they are still there today within the reedbeds near Bonnie's Tea Room and Visitor's Centre at Wildgoose. Here's hoping our ringing team can tag one so that we can follow their movement to and from the UK.
