Over the last few years, we’ve developed a pioneering community research approach that puts local people at the centre of change.

By working directly with communities, we support residents to explore the issues that matter most to them, identify practical solutions and ensure their voices are heard by decision makers across Oxfordshire.

Most recently, we partnered with community researchers from grassroots groups to co produce a practical how to guide for anyone interested in carrying out their own community led research.

If you’d like to learn more about our approach, explore the projects we’ve supported, or use our new guide to start your own research, visit our website: https://healthwatchoxfordshire.co.uk/community-research

We are delighted to share our latest community research report, produced together with Sunrise Multicultural Project in Banbury.

We supported Sunrise to listen to the experiences of 20 women from the communities they work with in Banbury Neithrop and Ruscote, particularly South Asian women, to better understand the barriers they face when accessing healthcare - particularly around cancer awareness, screening diagnosis and support.

The women told us about long waits for GP, dentist and hospital appointments, challenges accessing interpreting support, and mixed experiences of cancer screening and diagnosis. Many also shared how important community encouragement is in helping women attend screening and seek help early, especially when information is practical, culturally appropriate and available in the right language.

As a result of this work so far, breast care nurse Sam Evans has visited Sunrise and translated information has been made available.

Huge thank you to everyone who shared their experiences, and to Sunrise for leading on this important project – we look forward to continuing to work with you!

Resident doctors – including those at OUH – are taking industrial action from 7am Monday 15 June – 6.59am Friday 19 June.

This is part of an ongoing dispute between resident doctors and government, and follows on from recent industrial action in April.
