Don’t put England flags on lamp posts during World Cup, council warns

Football fans who want to fly England flags from their homes during the World Cup are free to do so but should refrain from hanging them from public railings and lamp posts.

That’s the message from Wiltshire Council as the World Cup gets under way.

And it has pledged to remove flags and banners that are posing a public safety risk.

“With major sporting events such as the World Cup bringing communities together, many residents will want to show their support by displaying England flags and decorations,” said Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and street scene.

“We are all willing the England team on to end 60 years of hurt and bring the trophy home.

“However, we would like to remind residents that placing items such as banners, bunting or flags on or near the public highway – including lampposts, road signs and roundabouts – without permission, can pose safety risks to road users and pedestrians. It can also obstruct visibility.”

Local Plan withdrawal raises fears over further housing development

Warminster could face increased pressure for new housing developments after Wiltshire Council withdrew its draft Local Plan, raising concerns that developers may find it easier to secure planning permission on sites not allocated for development.

The authority agreed to remove the Local Plan (2020-2038) from the independent examination process at a Full Council meeting on 19th May following a narrow vote. The decision came after planning inspectors indicated the plan was unlikely to pass examination in its current form.

The plan, which Wiltshire Council started preparing in 2017, set out where new housing should be built across the county.

Inspectors recommended that the plan be withdrawn, saying it did not allocate enough land to meet housing need, relied on uncertain new settlements and failed to match housing delivery with areas of demand.

Ex-Wiltshire Police officer accused of pretending to work

A former police officer has been accused of pretending to be working by pressing multiple keys on her keyboard.

Former Police Constable 0302 Lauren Fairley is set to appear before a Gross Misconduct Hearing at Devizes Police Headquarters on Monday, June 15.

Fairley, who served as a neighbourhood police constable in Warminster, allegedly 'manipulated her keyboard by pressing multiple keys' on 12 occasions between July 2025 and August 2025 to make it seem like she was actively working.

The former officer is also accused of recording a meeting with a supervisor on her mobile phone on July 3, 2025, contrary to the Standards of Professional Behaviour.

The alleged breaches are honesty and integrity, duties and responsibilities and discreditable conduct.

These allegations will be considered by the Gross Misconduct Hearing next week.
