Please note that grants are not available to for-profit organisations or for activities intended to generate private profit.

We will be sharing the results of our recent resident survey and discussing the next 5-year Town Plan. This is your opportunity to get involved, share your views and help shape the future priorities of the town.

We will also be joined by a guest speaker from the Food Pantry, who will be explaining the support they provide within the community and their hopes to expand the number of people they are able to help.

We hope to see you there!

🌐 Wigton Town Council Survey 🌐

Thank you to everyone who has completed the survey so far. We have received lots of interesting comments and feedback which will definitely help shape the new Town Plan.

We have also already been able to action some of your requests, including:

• Placing biodegradable dog poo bags at three locations across the town to see if this helps reduce dog fouling.
• Creating a list and rota of all the jobs that need to be carried out within St Mary’s Church grounds. The gate is currently being repaired too.
• Arranging for a licensed pest control visit to the allotments to assess the rabbit situation (with no myxomatosis involved!).
• Reviewing concerns regarding the public toilets:

Opening times are displayed on the toilet doors.
We understand that people may sometimes need access outside of these hours, so if this applies to you please get in touch and we can advise how to gain access to the disabled toilet, which is available 24 hours a day.

The disabled toilet is also due to be painted by the grounds team.
Our office now oversees the daily cleaning arrangements and the toilets are in a much better condition.

We no longer regularly have to close the toilets due to blockages (unless a plumber is required), and additional measures have been put in place to help prevent vandalism. Thankfully, these incidents have now decreased.

Your comments and feedback are genuinely taken into account and we will always do our best to improve the services and areas we are responsible for.

If you haven’t already completed the survey, please take a few minutes to do so. The feedback received will directly help shape the future Town Plan for Wigton.

ā“How are we fundedā“

Did you know that Wigton Town Council receives its funding through the precept? Each year we submit a precept request to Cumberland Council, who then collect this as part of residents’ Council Tax bills.

Because this directly affects how much Council Tax residents pay, we have to be very mindful and responsible when setting our budget and submitting our annual request.

This is one of the reasons why certain large-scale projects can be difficult to deliver, even when we would love to provide them. For example, projects such as building new public toilets in another area of the town or installing an all-weather sports pitch could easily cost £1 million or more.

Unfortunately, there are not many grant opportunities available specifically for town councils and, when grants are available, they are often limited in value and do not cover the full cost of major projects.

That is why the Town Council has to carefully prioritise spending and focus on maintaining and improving the services and facilities we already provide, whilst continuing to look for funding opportunities wherever possible.

18/05/2026

Some interesting feedback from our resident survey has shown that not everyone is sure which services are the responsibility of Wigton Town Council and which are the responsibility of Cumberland Council. So, we thought it might be helpful to provide a simple guide below.

Wigton Town Council is responsible for:
• Wigton Park (Greenacres)
•Phoenix and Throstle Park
•Barton Laws field and building
•Allotments
•Some events - Christmas & Party in the Park
•St Mary's Church Grounds
•Wigton Cemetery grounds (Jointly looked after by Wigton, Waverton and Woodside councils)
•Planters around the town
•Plants around the Fountain (but not the Fountain itself)
•Civic events
•Public toilets

Cumberland Council is responsible for:
• Roads, potholes and pavements
• On street parking and car parks (council owned)
• Street lighting and road signs
• Bin collections and recycling
• Street cleaning
• Planning applications and enforcement
• Schools and education services
• Social care services
• Benefits and Council Tax
• Licensing and environmental health

We know it can sometimes be confusing as both councils work within the same area, but they are responsible for very different services.

If you are unsure who deals with a particular issue in the future, please feel free to contact us and we will always try to point you in the right direction.

11/05/2026

Wigton Town Council is aware of false information currently being circulated on social media alleging that the Council intends to deliberately ā€œlayā€ Myxomatosis in order to cull rabbits.

This statement is completely untrue.

Wigton Town Council has never used Myxomatosis, has never considered using Myxomatosis and would never be involved in any such activity. Deliberately infecting rabbits with Myxomatosis would be ILLEGAL and wholly unacceptable.

For clarity, Myxomatosis is a virus. It is not something that can simply be ā€œlaidā€ around an area in the manner being suggested online. It also cannot be 'purchased' from DEFRA, as also suggested. This would be ILLEGAL.

Due to the increasing rabbit population and the damage being caused to land and allotment holders’ crops, the Council has arranged for a licensed pest controller to visit on Tuesday 26th May to assess the situation and provide professional advice regarding lawful and appropriate next steps.

We would respectfully ask residents not to spread misinformation or speculation online, particularly regarding serious allegations of illegal activity.

Any action taken by the Council will always be lawful, professional and carried out with appropriate advice and oversight.

The Council also welcomes residents querying or discussing its actions directly and we would be more than happy to speak with anyone who has concerns, either by email or by calling the Town Council office.

Thank You
