🏫 RUNCORN SCHOOLS UNDER THREAT OF CLOSURE

Many Runcorn schools are under threat of closure, and Halton Borough Council is currently consulting on the potential closure of some of those schools across Runcorn.

This is your chance to have your say and make your views known.

There’s something for everyone, with beginner-friendly sessions including Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Active Bingo and gentle exercise - or you can simply pop in for a cuppa and a chat and find out more about getting active locally. ☕😊

🏰 CELEBRATING HALTON’S HISTORY & HERITAGE

Today, our Councillor for Halton Castle ward spoke to BBC Radio Merseyside about plans to form a community group to better highlight the history and heritage of Halton, starting with Halton Castle.

Our own Medieval Castle, one of only two in Cheshire, has played an important part in English history, but is almost invisible and has not been showcased for many decades.

If we can reignite interest and educate the region about the Castle, we can hopefully kick-start the desperately-needed pride in Runcorn, Widnes and wider Halton that will one day unify the borough behind a fascinating historical story.

We have to love where we live! 🩵

🚧 PRESTON BROOK – FOOTWAY IMPROVEMENT WORKS

Following concerns raised by Reform UK Cllr Peter Davidson, and a complaint made directly to Halton Borough Council regarding the condition of footways in Preston Brook, we’re pleased to confirm that improvement works are now scheduled to take place.

📅 Works are due to begin on 23 September 2026 and are expected to take approximately one week, subject to weather and any unforeseen circumstances.

The works will include repairs and maintenance to improve the condition of the existing footways, including localised patching and resurfacing where required.

The attached map shows the areas included in the planned works.

The contractor carrying out the work will be RMS Ltd, supervised by Halton Borough Council’s Highways team. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever reasonably possible, although some temporary restrictions may be necessary.

Cllr Peter Davidson will continue to raise local highways issues and push for improvements across the area.

If we are fortunate enough to earn your trust next May and go on to lead Halton Council, we will deliver change based on five clear priorities:

🔴 HALTON PEOPLE FIRST
Every decision we make will be focused on one thing: improving the lives of the people who live here. Council services should work for residents, not bureaucracy.

🔴 SECURE HALTON’S FINANCES
We will bring business discipline to the Council. We will control costs, cut waste and stop spending taxpayers’ money on fads, fashions and non-essential projects. Frontline services must come first.

🔴 FIX WHAT YOU SEE
Residents should be proud of where they live. We will focus on the basics — clean streets, well-maintained roads, parks and public spaces, and reliable frontline services. We will fix the things residents see every day.

🔴 SAFE HALTON COMMUNITIES
We will tackle the blight caused by the unchecked growth of HMOs, take a tougher approach to anti-social behaviour and work with the police to design out crime and make our communities safer.

🔴 HALTON BUSINESS FIRST
Local businesses create local jobs. We will put Halton businesses first in Council procurement wherever the rules allow, improve payment terms and campaign for a local-user discount scheme to reduce bridge tolls for businesses operating in Halton.

We have a plan. We have the determination. And we are ready to deliver the change Halton needs.

🩵 TAKING PRIDE IN OUR COMMUNITY 🩵

Cllr John Scott has been out and about in Daresbury, Moore & Sandymoor, getting stuck in and helping to tidy up the local area.

Rather than just walking past the litter, leaves and debris building up along the paths, John rolled up his sleeves, cleared it away and gave the paths a good clean.

🩵 Cleaner paths, tidier streets and neighbourhoods that people can take pride in 🩵

For our Reform councillors, representing your community isn’t just about sitting in council meetings. It’s about being visible, getting involved and doing what you can to make a difference.

CIPFA REPORT: REFORM WAS RIGHT ABOUT HALTON’S FINANCES

Everything we have been warning about for some time has now been vindicated by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) report into Halton Council’s precarious financial position.

Labour have driven the Council’s finances into crisis. The forecast budget gap is set to rise from £44.9 million this year to a staggering £118.6 million by 2030.

This is nothing short of a financial disaster. Services are at risk and vulnerable families could see vital support reduced or withdrawn - all because of Labour’s failure to get Halton’s finances under control.

We have consistently said that Labour does not understand the scale of the financial mess it has created.

CIPFA agrees.

The report found ‘limited evidence’ that Labour understands the concept of transformation and highlighted an unwillingness to make ‘difficult decisions’.

We said the Council’s transformation and savings plan was inadequate, flawed and, frankly, comically inept.

CIPFA agrees, noting that:

‘The cost of transformation has been greater than the savings delivered.’

We have also said that the Stadium should be transferred out of Council ownership and into the hands of the Vikings or another private operator because of the continuing drain on Council finances.

Labour wants to keep it under Council ownership.

CIPFA describes the Stadium as ‘unaffordable’.

Reform has been consistent about what needs to change.

We will stabilise the Council’s finances, introduce proper business principles, set clear targets, require weekly trading reviews, focus on productivity, invest to save and strengthen delegation of authority limits to bring spending under control.

Labour has failed Halton.

Their financial mismanagement has put our services - and some of the most vulnerable people in our borough - at risk.

We cannot afford to reward that failure.

Halton needs change. Halton needs Reform. 🩵

🌳 HOUGH GREEN PARK - PETITION UPDATE

Today, Cllr Claire Aberdeen met with Halton Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Andrew Donaldson, to formally submit the petition calling for the overnight locking of Hough Green Park to be reinstated.

After spending time speaking directly with residents living in the immediate vicinity of the park, Claire gathered around 200 signatures from people concerned about the decision to leave the park permanently open.

And residents’ voices have been heard.

Because of the number of signatures received, the petition has now triggered a full review of the policy. The review will consider all potential options for reinstating the overnight locking arrangements before recommendations are taken to the relevant Policy and Performance Board (PPB).

Over the coming weeks, Cllr Aberdeen will be meeting with the key officers involved in the review and will have the opportunity to present the recommendations to the PPB for consideration.

Due to the timing of committee meetings, this is expected to be presented in November.

In the meantime, Andrew has reassured Cllr Aberdeen that local police officers will be monitoring the park.

Claire would like to personally thank every resident who took the time to speak with her and everyone who signed the petition.

Cllr Aberdeen will be writing to residents with a fuller update over the next few days.
