It was helpful to meet with Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah and head of Gov relations Simon McNamara for discussions about the proposed reduction in lifeline routes between Shetland and Inverness. I appreciate their time and their willingness to discuss openly.

I was also glad to be joined online by my colleague Kristopher Leask from the Orkney Greens.

In addition to our geography and density of island communities, Scotland stands out as a bit of an oddity in Europe - with a wholly private airline operating many lifeline routes that are (more often than not) uncommercial. A challenging circle to square.

There is desire from all sides to see us bring our heads together and find a long term solution for island communities - and that requires collaboration and long term ambition well political a term.

Alistair and I kicking off the collaboration.

This is the first time ever that Shetland has been represented by two parties. Liberal Democrat and SNP. This is new, it is different and if done right (and that responsibility is on Alistair and I), it could be a winning combination for Shetland.

We talked about some key priorities for working together and agreed on Tunnel vision and Shetland energy act as our starter ambitions.

I look forward to working together and we are committed to seeing Shetland succeed.

£594: THE COST OF LABOUR’S BROKEN ENERGY BILL PROMISES

SCOTLAND’S ENERGY SHOULD BE IN SCOTLAND’S HANDS

The SNP has demanded that Scotland’s energy is put in Scotland’s hands following confirmation that energy bills are set to rise again in July under Westminster’s watch – with bills £594 higher than the Labour Party promised at the General Election

Yesterday, Ofgem confirmed that the energy price cap will soar in July by a further £221 from £1,641 to £1,862.

Before the Westminster General Election, Labour promised to cut energy bills by £300, but soon bills will be far higher than they pledged. In July 2024, the Energy Price Cap was £1,568 per year, which the Labour Party promised voters it would reduce by £300, meaning the price cap should be £1,268 not £1,862 – a massive £594 higher than promised.

Today, the Scottish Parliament will debate an SNP motion which demands that Scotland’s energy must be in Scotland’s hands in order that it benefits our people – lowering bills, protecting energy jobs and reaping the full rewards of our energy potential.

Commenting, SNP Energy spokesperson Graham Leadbitter MP, said:

“£594 – that’s the price households are paying for the Labour Party’s broken promises on energy bills. It is the price Scotland pays because Westminster controls our energy.

“The Labour Party promised ‘change’ but have continued the Westminster chaos, they promised to cut bills but under their watch the cost-of-living emergency has gone from bad to worse.

“People in energy rich Scotland pay some of the highest energy bills in Europe while up to 1000 energy jobs are being lost a month – it is a disgrace.

“Under Westminster control more than £350 billion has been syphoned off from our North Sea with nothing sent back the other way, but by putting Scotland’s energy in Scotland’s hands, we can lower bills and protect Scottish jobs.

“Most Scots want Scotland to control her own energy resources and the SNP won on a clear policy platform to demand just that – it’s time Westminster listened.

“Westminster’s refusal to acknowledge the basic injustice that energy rich Scotland is home to families that pay sky high bills is exactly why more and more people are concluding we need a fresh start with independence.”
