The Bloxwich Flag

The Bloxwich Flag The Official Bloxwich Flag was launched on Saturday 17th June 2017, designed by Julie Hikins We were up and running! and White, for peace and harmony.

The idea of the Bloxwich flag, or a flag for Bloxwich, was conceived in a conversation between the late local historian Stuart Williams and Martin Morris, admin on page 'Bloxwich Old & New' around January 2015. The next step was to set up a committee which comprised of Martin Morris and fellow Bloxwich Old & New admin Tony Kulik to begin with. After initially contacting various people inc

luding Nikki Rolls we decided to contact the Flag Institute of the U.K who were more than willing to send us the info to go ahead. During the summer of 2015, Bloxwich West councillors Louise Harrison, Matt Follows and Brad Allen were contacted with the idea and were added to the Bloxwich Flag committee. There was much to and fro-ing with ideas and it was a slow mover mainly due to lack of funds for advertising etc. However we persisted and eventually we persuaded a few local business' to help out namely The Bloxwich Hardware store in Elmore Row, David Nutt sewing machines and Chamberlain's funeral care who all 'chipped in' with donations. pages were set up and schools and the general public were informed and asked to come up with ideas for a flag design. It was now October 2016 and we were ready to set up a competition for anyone of any age to 'Design a flag for Bloxwich'....again it was slow going but we eventually received numerous designs to present to the Flag organisation for approval. In January 2017, almost two years to the day the committee met and chose four designs approved by the Flag org. These designs were to be voted on by the public over a Facebook poll and visitations to various sites around the town. The winning entry would win the prize of £150 kindly donated by Mr. Andy Spence, CEO of Weldqual, a local company, Andy himself being a Bloxwich lad. The winning design was a mixture of two submitted designs and the lucky winner was Mrs. Julie Hikins who received her prize at a grand unveiling ceremony at the Bloxwich Showman pub in the presence of local dignitaries Mayor Marco Longhi and M.P Eddie Hughes on 17th June 2017. The design itself incorporates three colours :- Green, representing the many semi-rural 'green' areas of Bloxwich and the areas themselves such as Elmore Green, Green Lane, Green Rock and of course The Green near the small park. Black, to remember that Bloxwich is part of the Black Country and its industrial past. The Lion in the upper canton (square) on the left side represents two historical events connected to Bloxwich. Firstly, the 'Romping Cat' pub, which was bestowed and built in the town by a wealthy landowner on the condition that there would always be a pub in the area with that name. Secondly, the story of the escaped lion that scaled a wall from a local fairground and ended up in someone's garden in Church Street!....'tis all true!! The Tree, in the lower canton on the left supports the semi-rural areas and leafy parks surrounding and within Bloxwich. There is also the legend of the 'Wishing Tree' which stood outside the now demolished pub 'The Bulls Head' in Park Road. Legend as it that a man was caught drinking inside the pub by his wife who believed he was at work. After a scolding by the wife she immediately went outside and whilst standing next to the tree wished that the roof would fall in on them all, which it subsequently did!.....apparently...believe it or not! The Bloxwich Standard, donated to the people of Bloxwich by the late Charlotte May Morris, as taken part in several Remembrance Day parades to date and also Elmore Green school Remembrance Day service. Proud bearer of the standard is Martin Morris who paraded on 11/11/2018, 10/11/2019, 8/11/2020 and 14/11/2021. Mark Beale took over standard bearer duties 13/11/2022, 05/11/2023
Craig Timmins paraded the flag 10/11/2024, 09/11/2025

The Bloxwich flag itself was raised above the town at the Promenade Garden on Saturday 22nd June 2019 by designer Julie Hikins. A second flag was raised on Elmore Green Road on Saturday 26th October 2019 by Lee Brown from local business Midland Mars who kindly donated both flag poles to Bloxwich. Further to this the Elmore Green flag and flag pole was dedicated to the memory of the late Stuart Williams ' Who gave so much to Bloxwich'
