Month
Most of the members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group have Aphasia, affecting their ability to understand or communicate.
Click the images to read about some kinds of aphasia.
If you meet someone who doesn't quite seem to 'get' what's going on, or who struggles to find the words they need, perhaps they are a stroke survivor.
Give them plenty of time, listen carefully and be patient.

Month
Most members of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group have Aphasia - a difficulty with communication of varying kinds.
One member has told us that they love to go out into nature, because it's quiet and they don't have to listen hard to what people are saying, or try to interpret what the words mean.
This spot by the Thames is ideal for them! There's just birdsong, the breeze and the gentle rain to listen to, with the sounds of children playing in the distance. No words to worry about!

From time to time, Hillingdon Stroke Support Group is asked to speak to patients in hospital who have recently had a stroke or a brain injury.
Last week our Group member Steve went along, with two Stroke Association volunteer Community Connectors. It was perfect timing for Month!
The staff said: "It makes such a positive difference when patients hear directly from those who have been in similar situations... The sense of hope and determination... was incredible... As a clinician, it made me reflect on the powerful message that was coming across... I think it was particularly helpful for families to hear, too. Unlike other medical conditions, there is no 'fix' or return to 'normality' or 'old self, adjustment and acceptance of this seems to be central."
We're always glad to be of help!

Visit our stall at the Carers Trust Hillingdon Carers' Fair next week, at Watts Hall and Bailey Hall, Christ Church Methodist Church, Redford Way, Uxbridge UB8 1JT.
It is our first event for Aphasia Awareness Month.
Ask us about stroke, about the communication difficulties it can bring - Aphasia - and about what Hillingdon Stroke Support Group and the Stroke Association can do for you or the person you care for.

Sadly, some stroke survivors have had a traumatic time, waiting for their stroke to be correctly diagnosed - just like Paige.
You can help Hillingdon Stroke Support Group raise awareness of the many different symptoms of a stroke.
A small donation will help us continue our work, at weekly meetings for stroke survivors in Uxbridge, and at public information stalls in London Borough of Hillingdon.

Yes, 240 people each day have a stroke in the UK.
If you know someone living with stroke in or around London Borough of Hillingdon, why not suggest Hillingdon Stroke Support Group?
An informal, social group where stroke survivors - mostly with communication difficulties - can meet together, learn about health and local support, play games, engage in a quiz and have a reason to communicate.

At this week's meeting of Hillingdon Stroke Support Group in Bailey Hall (Christ Church Methodist Church), Redford Way, Uxbridge UB8 1JT:
Nicholas Smith from Hillingdon Shopmobility talked to members about the mobility support they can receive in Uxbridge. If someone has difficulty leaving The Chimes shopping centre, members can call at the Shopmobility office on the top floor for help.
Nick also sold keys to members for the toilets for disabled people (£5).

Raising Awareness of Stroke every day in May
It's the last day of May! What has Hillingdon Stroke Support Group achieved this month to raise awareness of stroke? Who has helped us along the way?
Here goes:
we've held public information stalls in one London Borough of Hillingdon library, plus four sports centres run by Better Leisure, we've talked to many members of the public and given advice on protecting ourselves against stroke; we've spoken to professionals and given them information to share with their clients; we've liaised with the Stroke Association to ensure that we hand out good quality information.
Who has helped us?
All of the above, plus H4All for recruiting our most recent voluntary helpers, and all of the companies and organisations on the photo. Finally our thanks go to the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Philip Corthorne, for choosing us as one of his charities for the past year.
What are we doing next?
June is Aphasia Awareness Month. As aphasia is a condition that affects most of our members following their stroke, we aim to help more people understand it. Aphasia is a communication difficulty. It can affect speaking, and impair understanding of speech or print, and it can make writing or using numbers difficult. We'll tell you much more about this in June!
