Another busy week in Westminster! 💪

🤝 I met with Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Number 10 to discuss our campaign to regulate the funeral industry. I’m pleased the Prime Minister is behind this, and I’ll be meeting Health Secretary Yvette Cooper soon to discuss what comes next. Nobody should have to go through what Cody, Liam and Zoe went through.

🗣️ On Tuesday, I took part in a Westminster Hall debate on the safety of the Jewish community in the UK before attending the Health Bill debate in the House of Commons.

🎆 I met fellow Yorkshire MP Kate Dearden on Wednesday to discuss the Government’s firework consultation, as well as my own local survey. Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. If you haven’t, there’s still time to have your say through the link in the comments.

👶 On Thursday, I spoke in Westminster Hall about the importance of male role models and the need for better paternity pay. As a dad of two boys, with another on the way, this is something I care strongly about. Later in the evening, I met the Egyptian ambassador to discuss the crisis in Sudan and what more can be done to support refugees and help them return home safely.

🗳️ I stayed in Westminster on Friday to vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. It wasn’t the outcome I hoped for, but the focus must now turn to making sure terminally ill people have access to the very best palliative care. If that is the choice Parliament has made, we must now put our money where our mouth is.

📊 Back in the constituency yesterday, I held my latest surgery in Gildersome. Massive thanks to all residents that attended; we'll be actioning all the casework brought to us. Then I attended a public meeting in Drighlington about racing on the A650, we’re going to bring all agencies together to find a solution.

My statement on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill:

Today I voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, again.

I’m grateful to all of the constituents who contacted me ahead of the vote and, once again, I read everything you sent me before voting.

The conclusion I drew at the last vote still stands: people in intolerable pain deserve the choice. Currently, the only people with that choice are those who have the means to travel and pay for services in other countries. Those without the means have no choice at all.

I also heard more examples, both from constituents and during the debate in the House of Commons, of individuals who died in the most painful ways, despite receiving the best medicine that palliative care had to offer them.

Some constituents have rightly asked me why Assisted Dying requires another vote by MPs, despite the same Bill being approved by the House of Commons already.

This happened because, once the previous Bill reached the House of Lords, over 1200 amendments were submitted by peers and the Bill ran out of time. It was brought back today by another MP through the Private Members' Bill process.

However, MPs voted against the Bill today and it will now not become law. Some MPs changed their mind on the basis that the Bill as drafted could not be made fit for purpose, following arguments that were made during the debate in the House of Lords. I disagree with them, but I respect their views completely. The democratically elected House of Commons has now made its view clear.

We must now turn to improving palliative care, which MPs from all parties called for during the course of this debate. We have heard enough evidence that it is not fit for purpose. There must be genuine, cross-party work to address palliative care so that calls for its improvement do not ring hollow.

Whether you agree with me or not, I fully respect your views on this issue of conscience. I have come to my conclusions by interpreting the evidence as I see it, and I recognise that someone else can come to a completely different answer to me. Today we mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks on September 11 that killed 2977 people, including 67 Britons.

I was 11 years old at the time and those images will remain with me for the rest of my life. I remember the emergency services running towards danger and climbing the tower. Heroes, every one of them.

We also remember the passengers on Flight 93 who lost their lives trying to prevent another attack, along with those who died at the Pentagon. My thoughts are with them all today.

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we remember everyone affected by su***de and recommit to preventing future deaths.

I’m proud to support Samaritans and the many organisations working to prevent su***de and support people who are struggling, including those doing vital work here in Leeds South West and Morley.

Some of you may have recently seen a particularly moving campaign started by one of my constituents, Alicia.

After losing her sister, Emma, earlier this year, Alicia has been raising awareness of su***de prevention and calling for a review of pedestrian access to motorways.

It is a deeply personal campaign, born from unimaginable loss. Alicia’s determination to help prevent other families from going through the same pain is incredibly powerful.

Su***de is not inevitable. If you’re struggling, or worried about someone else, you don’t have to face it alone.

Grieving families deserve better.

They deserve the peace of mind that their loved one is being treated with dignity and respect. Following a relentless campaign and a meeting with the Prime Minister, I spoke to ITV News about the next steps for funeral industry regulation.

The Prime Minister agrees; it’s time to regulate the funeral industry.

Last night, I met with Andy Burnham to talk about Cody, Liam and Zoe’s terrible experiences with a rogue funeral operator.

We spoke about the options available to regulate the industry and the need to get this done properly.

I’m looking forward to meeting with the Health Secretary to delve further into the specific details of proposals to regulate the industry.

A busy first week back 💪

🎥 I spent the bank holiday with my ever-growing family and was back in Westminster from Tuesday. I spoke to ITV News about the progress we’ve made in our campaign to regulate the funeral industry and, more importantly, what the next steps are.

🗣️ It was a question I put directly to Andy Burnham later in the afternoon during his opening statement to the House. I’m delighted that the PM has committed to formally meeting with me to discuss this very subject, and I’ll update you all very soon.

📝 Wednesday began with an Education Select Committee meeting, where we discussed the mental health of young people and what we can do to further support that. Delighted to rejoin the committee after summer recess; we will publish our report in this key area later this year.

🧑‍⚖️ Then came PMQs, and I’d like to pay tribute to my colleague and neighbour Kim Leadbeater MBE who raised concerns over antisocial behaviour in her constituency. Residents in Leeds South West and Morley regularly contact my office about speeding, e-bikes and fireworks, so it was fantastic to see this issue being given the airtime it needs.

🎆 I’ve had residents contact my office over the Government’s landmark firework consultation. While I absolutely welcome their approach, the documentation is far from straight-forward, which is why I’ve rolled out my own simpler fireworks survey for my constituents to put their views forward. I strongly encourage everyone to take part through the link in the comments. I’ll be submitting your responses directly to the Government at the end of September.

💷 It was then time to debate the Representation of the People Bill. I have submitted amendments which force political parties to check the source of the funds before they accept a single penny. I’m confident that we’re going to make significant progress in this area, which is non-negotiable if we want to protect our democracy. Massive thanks to Phil Brickell MP for his support.

📈 I was delighted to meet with great Lord Blunkett on Thursday with the Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire APPG, of which I am chair. We had really positive discussions about the opportunities for growth in the region, now that we have a PM who is focused on devolution and growth in every postcode. More to come on that.

👶 I’m usually back in the constituency on Fridays but stayed in Westminster this week for a private member’s bill. This bill was all about support for babies, parents and carers during the first 1,001 days of an infant’s life. I’m pleased to say that there’s much more to come on this too, because the bill rightly passed its second reading stage.

🤝 Saturday began with my weekly surgery, this time at St John’s Church in Wortley. Thanks to everyone that came, and massive well done to my new caseworker Rob for completing his first in-person surgery. Rob joins us with a boat load of experience, and I’m really looking forward to working with him closely to keep delivering for people in Leeds South West and Morley.
