Something haunting is developing… 📸 👻

Teddington Tintype are returning to Strawberry Hill this Halloween! On Saturday 31 October, their outdoor photobooth will capture your finest costumes in wonderfully atmospheric Victorian-style portraits.

Each image is completely unique — developed by hand on a metal plate, with all the drama, beauty and imperfection of early photography. The perfect keepsake from a visit to Walpole’s little Gothic castle. 🏰

✨ Special one-day prices:
• 5 × 4” tintype — £40 (usually £60)
• 5 × 7” tintype — £60 (usually £80)

No booking required — portraits are available on a first come, first served basis and charged separately.

🎃 Little ghouls of Twickenham… a Halloween adventure awaits!

Explore the grounds of Strawberry Hill House, our little Gothic castle right here in Twickenham, on a Halloween Garden Trail filled with riddles and spooky surprises. Solve the clues to claim your sweet treat! 🍬

These photos capture last year’s fun, and we can’t wait to discover what new delights our gardener Gemma will conjure up for us… perhaps a ghostly visitor or something straight from the pages of a Gothic tale? 👻📖

🏰 Continue your adventure inside the House, dressed for Halloween! Under-5s visit FREE with a paying adult, and tickets for children aged 6–16 are just £8.25. The House will be open seven days a week during half term.

Traditions, Transmissions, Translations 📚

How might we understand the Gothic Revival as an international network of ideas, objects and exchanges? 🌍

This two-day international conference will explore connections across literature, the visual arts, architecture and material culture, examining how Gothic forms travelled across borders and between media.

🗓 17–18 June 2027

We welcome proposals for twenty-minute papers and themed panels from scholars at all career stages. Early-career researchers and scholars working outside the UK are particularly encouraged to apply.

In a letter of 27 April 1753, Horace Walpole gave us a word for the atmosphere he was creating at Strawberry Hill: “gloomth.” 🕯️ 🏰
Writing to his friend Horace Mann, Walpole described the pleasure of “imprinting the gloomth of abbeys and cathedrals on one’s house”. His garden, he explained, should be “nothing but riant, and the gaiety of nature”.

As Halloween approaches, it feels like the perfect moment to share the passage in Walpole’s own handwriting. 🔍

On Halloween’s eve, explore Horace Walpole’s little Gothic castle after dark, wandering through its labyrinth of shadowy rooms before taking your seat in the magnificent Gallery for a live performance by legendary magic lanternists Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker of the . 🌙

Experience the ghostly thrills of a Victorian Phantasmagoria, with goblins, ghouls and spectacular images that dissolve, transform and move before your eyes—all projected using an authentic triple magic lantern from the 1890s. 👻🎃

Life behind the scenes curating at our little Gothic castle 🗝️

Featuring the incredible and , who joined us for World Goth Day 🖤, plus condition checks on three remarkable works: two new arrivals in the Tribune and Johann Heinrich Müntz’s South East View of Strawberry Hill House in the Red Bedchamber. 🔍

The Tribune’s new arrivals came to us through the Acceptance in Lieu scheme: A Tyrolean Girl, by Felicità Sartori after Rosalba Carriera, with a floral surround by Francesco Trevisani; and The Virgin and Child, after Bernaert van Orley.

We’re nearly there with our campaign to bring Müntz’s view of Strawberry Hill home permanently! 🏰

If you haven’t visited us in Twickenham yet, Halloween is the perfect time. 🎃 There’s a Victorian phantasmagoria at our Magic Lantern Show 📽️, a garden trail for little ghouls 👻 and you can even join us after-dark for Halloween itself to explore by candlelight. 🕯️
