🍽️✨ Just a handful of tickets remain for Strawberry Hill After Dark: A History of Georgian Feasting with Dr Amy Boyington (Dr Amy Boyington) 🍷
Ahead of the event, we’re taking a closer look at the Great Parlour, Strawberry Hill’s remarkable Gothic dining room, which features in Amy’s new book 📖 The Country House Dining Room (Yale University Press, 2026).
At a time when most dining rooms remained firmly Classical in style, Horace Walpole chose something far more theatrical. 🏰The Great Parlour was one of the most striking Gothic Revival dining rooms of the 18th century…
In her book, Amy highlights the room’s Gothic chimneypiece, designed by Walpole’s friend Richard Bentley. Above it, Walpole displayed “a fine Etruscan vase, between two bottles of black and gold porcelain”, transforming even the fireplace into a carefully curated spectacle for his guests ✨
