Working to turn a street and local schools solar, Power Station is a scalable in-your-face prototype of community led power. Channelling Withnail and I and Ealing comedy the film charts the financial and emotional trials and tribulations of making change together. From sleeping on rooftops to growing thousands of sunflowers and attempts at Christmas number one, community spirit and resilience are at the heart of this documentary.

You can’t have infinite growth on a finite planet.

While CEOs and politicians demand exponential economic growth, our topsoil, ecosystems, our children, the food we eat, air we breathe, the water we drink, and the animals we share this earth with all pay the price. Economic growth is wrecking the planet, and no-one seems to have the collective appetite or sets of policies to change anything.

Growth yielding continual improvements to living standards asks us to look the other way. The cheerleaders for capitalism that promote infinite growth also expect us to believe that technology can save our future, but hoping to avoid the worst of climate change by inventing future technology is like jumping off a cliff intending to invent a jetpack before hitting the ground.

It is possible to stay within reasonable ecological boundaries while providing decent living standards for all, with a set of policies under the banner of Degrowth. The most polluting industries are the worst for our welfare, like fossil fuel and the military industrial complex.

The Degrowth movement targets the worst offenders, reducing them in size. A planet where wars are no longer fought for oil doesn’t seem possible, given where we are now, but economists and anthropologists have worked hard behind the scenes to set out a concrete set of policies enabling us to enjoy life without killing the only planet we have.

The Cost Of Growth, a documentary by director Thomas Maddens, features Jason Hickel (anthropologist, economist) and Greta Thunberg.

Briony and Michael will hold space for all to talk these issues through with each other, with everyone having the chance to speak and be heard. Doors at 6pm, film starts at 6.30pm - bring a packed dinner if you haven’t already eaten!
