An afternoon at the Abbey focusing on Labyrinths past and present; their history and meaning, and the role they have played in the inner lives of people across traditions and cultures.
We will include a presentation on the Abbey’s own labyrinth, with a discussion of its history, how it played an important role in the Abbey’s work, and the possibility of its reconstruction, along with a broader look at the mythology and geometry of labyrinths worldwide.
Our speakers include Ms Uschi May and Mr Tom Bree, author of a major work on Wells Cathedral, ‘The Cosmos in Stone: Sacred Geometry of a Master Mason.’
The afternoon will culminate in a short recital of an 18th-c piece for small baroque ensemble by the French composer Marin Marais, ‘Le Labyrinthe’. This is a musical depiction of getting lost in and eventually escaping a physical labyrinth–widely believed to be inspired by the hedge maze in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.
We are honoured to welcome renowned international musicians Richard Boothby and Kristiina Watt for this very special short recital.
