STOURPORT CELEBRATES HERITAGE PORT STATUS
Stourport is commemorating its first anniversary as one of the country’s first ten Heritage Ports and Harbours.
As part of national Heritage Open Days, an open day at Stourport Yacht Club on Engine Lane on Saturday 14 September will include talks on local history, exhibits, guided walks around the basins and historic vessels. Food and drink will be available. The event begins at 10am.
Andrew Booton, Chair of Stourport Heritage Port Group, said, “Stourport is probably unique as a town that grew around a new inland port. The history of the area is fascinating and worth celebrating but it’s amazing how many people don’t know the basins are even here in the heart of our town. We hope this event will allow visitors to better appreciate our history, from James Brindley’s navigation in the eighteenth century to today’s leisure uses.”
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, offering free access to places that are often inaccessible to members of the public. They run every September. This year’s theme is ‘Routes - Networks - Connections’, perfect for Stourport’s history at the heart of the West Midlands’ canal network.
